Hochgrat - possible starting point for the mountain hike

The Nagelfluh ridge hike is a hike over eight peaks in the Nagelfluh chain in the Allgäu Alps . It leads from the 1834 meter high Hochgrat , the highest point of the chain, with a length of about 12 kilometers and an altitude difference of 1300 meters to the 1451 meter high Mittagberg . The average walking time is seven hours using the Hochgratbahn .

course

From the mountain station of the Hochgratbahn (1706 m) the path leads over the summit of the Hochgrat (1834 m) to the Brunnenauscharte at 1624 m, then it goes up to the 1822 m high Rindalphorn . The further course leads to the Gündlescharte , 1542 m, to the Gündleskopf and to the Buralpkopf (1772 m). After the Sederer walls and another notch , the Sedererstuiben (Sederer) is reached. Other peaks on the ridge are the Stuiben (1749 m), the Steineberg with a 17 m long ladder (can be bypassed) and finally the Mittagberg.

The distance between the Hochgratbahn mountain station and the Mittagbahn mountain station is around 14.5 km, with an ascent of around 1,240 meters and a descent of 1,530 meters. Allow about six hours for the entire hike.

Hints

The crossing is part of the European long-distance hiking trails E4 and E5 as well as the Maximiliansweg . It can also be done as a ski tour in winter . The path is always above the tree line with a view of the Allgäu mountains, the hilly Westallgäu and the Allgäu foothills.

About this picture
Western Nagelfluh chain from the north - the Nagelfluh ridge hike starts on the Hochgrat

If the hike is carried out as a two-day tour, the Staufner House can serve as a stage destination. There are several places where you can descend into the valley. In the valley you can rent a mountain bike for the route between the valley station of the Hochgratbahn and the Alpe Mittelberg , below the Stuiben , and cover the 13-kilometer route parallel to the ridge.
