Opuntia microdasys is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet microdasys is derived from the Greek adjective "μικρός" (micros) for small and "δασύς" (dasys) for thickly haired . Spanish common names are "Cegador", "Nopal cegador" and "Nopalillo Cegador".

Opuntia microdasys is shrubby and has many branches. It forms low cushions with a height of up to 1 meter. The elongated to round, pale green shoot sections are finely haired and 8 to 15 centimeters long. The striking, large, round areoles stand close together. They have numerous golden yellow or brownish glochids . Thorns are usually absent, but very rarely.

The yellow flowers have a reddish hue and reach up to 4 centimeters in diameter. The spherical, dark red fruits are covered with many areoles bearing dense glochids.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Opuntia microdasys is widespread in the Mexican Chihuahua desert . The distribution area extends south to the state of Hidalgo .

It was first described as Cactus microdasys in 1827 by Johann Georg Christian Lehmann (1792–1860). Ludwig Georg Karl Pfeiffer placed them in the genus Opuntia in 1837 . A synonym is Opuntia macrocalyx .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
