The Hochgratbahn is a cable car on the district of Steibis , a part of the municipality of the Oberstaufen market in the Oberallgäu district , Swabia in Bavaria .
Small cabin cable car
On October 4, 1963, the Nagelfluhkette with 5600 hectares was designated as a landscape protection area. In 1971, PHB Pohlig-Heckel-Bleichert (Cologne, Rohrbach / Saar) began building the gondola to the Hochgrat , which opened in 1972.
The valley station of the railway is at the foot of the Hochgrat, a mountain in the Nagelfluh chain . 850 meters in altitude from the valley station (856 m) to the mountain station (1706 m) is bridged by the small gondola lift designed for a maximum of 4 people or 320 kg per cabin. It has a maximum speed of 3.5 m / s (12.6 km / h).
From the mountain station you have a view of the southern Allgäu main ridge, Lake Constance , Bregenzerwald , Swiss mountains, Allgäu foothills and Upper Swabia . The summit of the 1,832 m high ridge can be reached in a half-hour hike. A mountain restaurant with a children's playground is attached to the mountain station.
technology
The gondolas are connected to the suspension / hoisting rope with the help of a gravity clamping technology developed and licensed by the Giovanolla company. Magnetic inductive monitoring prevents coupling to the rope splice . In such a case, the chain conveyor waits until the splice point has left the station again (the corresponding devices are located in the mountain and valley stations). Mechanical counters on the gondolas record the coupling processes so that the revision of the terminal can be determined according to the load.
summer
In summer there are six hikes on signposted trails.
- Summit trail
- Panorama circular hiking trail over Gütlesalpe
- Alpe Ober-Gelchen and back to the mountain station
- Descent from the summit via Brunnauscharte

- Western descent over the Entleguntkopf and the Falkenhütte to the valley station.
- Nagelfluh ridge hike (crossing the entire Nagelfluh chain) with approx. 7 hours of walking; only for experienced and sure-footed alpinists.
winter

- Eibele run (red marking)
- Waldkar run (red marking)
- Waldkar descent with variant over the Ahornhang (black markings)
Others
The mountain railway is owned by the princely Waldburg-Zeil family . The authorized signatory of the Hochgratbahn GmbH registered in the commercial register of Ravensburg was the member of the Baden-Württemberg state parliament, Gerhard Weng . Weng was also the chief representative of the Prince of Waldburg-Zeil .
