Born with the official family name of Graf von Waldburg zu Zeil und Trauchburg , the entrepreneur called himself Prince Georg von Waldburg zu Zeil und Trauchburg since the death of his father .

family

Zeil Castle

Georg Graf von Waldburg-Zeil was the son of Prince Erich von Waldburg zu Zeil and Trauchburg (1899–1953) and Princess Monika zu Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg (1905–1992). He had six younger siblings, including the CDU member of the Bundestag Alois Graf von Waldburg-Zeil , who has already died as well as the sister Josefine Princess von Lobkowicz (1929–1999) and the brother Eberhard Graf von Waldburg zu Zeil and Trauchburg (1940– 2013).

Georg von Waldburg-Zeil was married to Marie Gabrielle Princess of Bavaria (* 1931), a daughter of Albrecht of Bavaria , who was the son of the last Bavarian Crown Prince Rupprecht , since 1957 . The marriage resulted in five daughters and the son Erich (* 1962), who succeeded his father as head of the house after his death and has been married to a daughter of Carl Duke von Württemberg since 1988.

He lived at Zeil Castle near Leutkirch in the Allgäu.

Life

Georg von Waldburg-Zeil attended the St. Blasien boarding school until it was closed by the National Socialists in 1939 . After the end of the war, he made up his Abitur and studied at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen , where he passed the state examination in 1951 as a graduate economist .

When his father Erich August von Waldburg-Zeil died in a car accident on May 24, 1953, he took over all his father's businesses, two thirds of which consisted of agriculture and forestry in the Allgäu and one third of industry in southern Germany. He also succeeded his father as head of the former Princely House of Waldburg.

In the 1950s, he was one of the most important donors of the then controversial right-wing conservative group of the Occident Action , deputy chairman of the Occidental Academy and publisher of its magazine Neues Abendland ( the uncompromising Christian monthly for politics, culture and history ). Also in the 1950s, Georg von Waldburg-Zeil, like his brother Alois, was a member of the conservative European Documentation and Information Center (CEDI).

In the course of the post-war land reform of the state of Württemberg-Hohenzollern initiated by the Allied occupying powers from 1949, the Waldburg family was one of the three longest-resisting opponents. The reform was delayed until a compromise was reached with the newly formed state of Baden-Württemberg in 1969 (under Prime Minister Hans Filbinger ), as a result of which Georg von Waldburg-Zeil received an amount of 750,000 instead of the previously requested 2.88 million DM DM received; In return, the country waived the surrender of 138 hectares of land on the condition that this would be leased to farmers for twelve years.

Entrepreneurial activities

The entrepreneurial activities of Georg von Waldburg-Zeil and his family are broadly diversified. The family owns a good 10,000 hectares of land, mainly used for forestry and agriculture. This makes it one of the largest private landowners in Germany.

Georg von Waldburg-Zeil was the publisher of the Schwäbische Zeitung via Medienhaus Schwäbischer Verlag GmbH & Co. KG and was involved in the private broadcasters Radio 7 , Radio Seefunk , three regional television broadcasters and numerous other subsidiaries. Since the 1960s he was co-editor of the Allgäuer Zeitung and the Memminger Zeitung .

The von Waldburg-Zeil family also operates the regional airfield Leutkirch-Unterzeil , the Holzhof Zeil and several casinos , the Hochgratbahn and, since 1958, a chain of rehabilitation clinics and spa centers ( Waldburg-Zeil Kliniken , with more than 3000 employees).

South of the Argentine noble winter sports resort San Martín de Los Andes , he owned the Estancia "San Jorge" with several thousand hectares of coniferous wood plantation since the late 1970s , of which 2000 hectares were reserved for deer hunting . Neighboring estates of similar size are the German industrialists Ruprecht von Haniel and Wolf von Buchholtz (together they own over 15,000 hectares of land), with whom he cooperated, among other things, for forest fire prevention; for example, he had an existing runway expanded for fire-fighting aircraft.

The family also formerly owned (together with the Feldmühle Group ) the Baienfurt paper mill near Ravensburg, which was sold to Stora Enso in 1990 and closed at the end of 2008.

Georg von Waldburg-Zeil was temporarily a member of the advisory boards of Landesbank Baden-Württemberg (LBBW) as well as Deutsche Bank and president of the German Aero Club .

The Manager magazine listed the family in 2002 with at that time an estimated 2.5 billion euros to rank 39 of the list of the richest Germans , in 2005 with 0.35 billion euros still ranked 213th
