Stamp for the Staufer year 1977

The Staufer Medal is a special, personal award from the Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg for services to the state of Baden-Württemberg.

History and description

The Staufer Medal was awarded in 1977 on the occasion of the exhibition Die Zeit der Staufer. History, art, culture and the Staufer year 1977 in Baden-Württemberg for the first time coined and published.

The award criteria for the medal are defined as follows:

“The Staufer Medal is a special, personal award given by the Prime Minister for services to the state of Baden-Württemberg and its people. It is usually given in silver, in rare cases also in gold. The Staufer Medal is also intended to honor services to the common good which, in addition to actual professional duties, have been earned in the context of a usually voluntary, social or civic commitment and which have been rendered over many years. Everyone can informally submit a written suggestion to the State Ministry. "

The award of the Staufer Medal is combined with a certificate from the Prime Minister , in which he expresses his thanks and appreciation for the services of the honored personality (s) to the state of Baden-Württemberg.

Including the Staufer Medal, the state of Baden-Württemberg awards three general awards for merit: The state's badge of honor, which is awarded around 400 times per year, the Staufer medal, which is awarded around 50 times per year, and the State Order of Merit, which is awarded per year awarded about 30 times.

The front of the medal bears the inscription " The Staufers + 1079 - 1268 + " and refers to the Swabian noble family of the Staufers . In 1079 King Heinrich IV made his son-in-law Friedrich Duke of Swabia . With the execution of Conradin in Naples in 1268, the rule of the Hohenstaufen both in Italy and in Germany ended.

The front of the coin shows a throne statue of Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa , strictly frontal, inspired by the late antique and Byzantine tradition of rulers representation with imperial crown , peace Scepter , Imperial Cross and Sphaira , the insignia of the Holy Roman Empire. The reverse shows the coat of arms with the three lions, which has been used by the Hohenstaufen since King Heinrich (VII) , the eldest son and co-king of Frederick II, and which has been the coat of arms of the state of Baden-Württemberg since 1952 . Barbarossa only had one lion in the family coat of arms, his sons added a second Guelph lion and the third was added in 1220.

The three-lions coat of arms did not go under with the subsequent rule of the Habsburgs . The bailiffs in Upper and Lower Swabia ran it in the Middle Ages, as did the Swabian Empire later . Napoleon used it for the Kingdom of Württemberg and Bavaria for their national coat of arms since 1806. The three lions coat of arms recalls a history and tradition that were common to all earlier parts of the country.

The medalists Hubert Alter Zimmermann and Wolfgang Theodor Döhm were involved in the design of the medal , as well as the State Mint , in particular its former director Karl Förster, and the experts Decker-Hauff , Brudi , Himmelein and Cichy.
