Walter Brudi

Walter Brudi (born January 24, 1907 in Stuttgart ; † December 9, 1987 ibid) was a German painter and graphic artist .

Brudi studied from 1924 to 1928 in Stuttgart with Ernst Schneidler University of Applied Sciences . From 1932 to 1935 he taught in Berlin , after which he was a teacher at the master school for Germany's book printers in Munich until 1945 . From 1949 to 1973 he was professor of book graphics and typography at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart , from 1959 to 1969 he was its rector, an office from which he had to resign during the student unrest in severe criticism. In 1966 Walter Brudi founded the Academy's Institute for Book Design (today: Institute for Book Design and Media Development) and took over its management until 1973. Several of the book publications he published during this period in collaboration with Hans Frank, Karl Wahl and Horst Wöhrle were intended to be exemplary on the graphic Work towards practice. His more important Stuttgart students include Albrecht Ade , Wilfried Blecher , Wolfgang Gäfgen , Klaus Grözinger , Günter Jacki , Bernd Kastenholz , Paul König , Peter Steiner , Kurt Weidemann , Peter Keidel and Hans Peter Willberg .

Brudi initially created advertising graphics and calligraphic works, but later dealt with the graphic design of books ( typesetting , covers , illustrations ). From 1952 to 1959 he also designed some postage stamps for the Deutsche Bundespost . As chairman of the art advisory board of the Deutsche Bundespost, he worked for years to raise the level of postage stamp design.

In March 2018, the Württemberg State Library in Stuttgart acquired the artistic estate of Walter Brudis from the family.
