Bernd Kastenholz (born April 18, 1949 in Speyer ) is a German painter and graphic artist .

life and work

Kastenholz grew up in Haßloch and attended the master school for craftsmen in Kaiserslautern (painting apprenticeship) from 1964 to 1967 . He then moved from 1967 to 1969 to the Staatliche Werkkunstschule Mainz and studied graphics and design. From 1969 to 1973 he studied graphics with Walter Brudi at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart .

Between 1970 and 1986, Kastenholz mainly dealt with the graphic techniques of line etching and aquatint , preferring to colorize the black and white prints he made. His motifs were social outsiders such as jugglers, dancers, harlequins and bank singers, which he exaggerated folklorically with idiosyncratic colors and expressive lines. In later years he continued his imagery in three-dimensional form. Kastenholz 'sculptures consist of numerous colored, lacquered, galvanized steel sheets, which he - not without subtle humor - assemble into figurative objects.

Kastenholz is a member of the Palatinate Secession . He has lived and worked as a freelance painter in Gleisweiler since 1972 . He was awarded the Pfälzer Kunstfreunde (1973), the Palatinate Prize for Fine Arts (1976) and the Hans Purrmann Prize for Painting (1980).
