Hans Purrmann Prize
The Hans-Purrmann-Prizes for Fine Arts are art prizes from the city of Speyer , which are usually awarded every two years (until 2015 every three years). The sponsorship award “Hans Purrmann Prize of the City of Speyer” was donated by the city council one year before the death of the artist Hans Purrmann on the occasion of the 85th birthday of the name giver and in 1966 it was first advertised. Since 2012, the "Great Hans Purrmann Prize of the City of Speyer" has been awarded another prize, which is supported by the Hans Purrmann Foundation, as has the sponsorship prize since 2017.
The Prize "Hans-Purrmann Prize of the city of Speyer for Fine Arts" will, so the express wish of Hans Purrmann, will be awarded to eligible young artists, comparable to the life stages of Hans Purrmann (born in the Palatinate, living and working stations in Munich , Berlin, Paris, Rome, Florence, but also Switzerland and Lake Constance) have a European perspective and reference, but also an arc of European metropolises and rural areas. Anyone who fulfills this condition and has not yet exceeded the age of 35 can apply for the € 6,000 sponsorship award during the application phase.
You cannot apply yourself for the € 20,000 Great Hans Purrmann Prize of the City of Speyer . The artists are proposed for the competition by around 50 renowned artists, curators and art critics with international experience.
A two-stage selection process takes place for both prizes, with the aim of inviting up to 8-10 applicants for the exhibition and the respective main selection process.
The decision about participation in the exhibition and the awarding of prizes is made by an independent jury consisting of five members (overall jury). In addition to three renowned and internationally respected artists, the jury should include (suggestion by the city of Speyer): if applicable, a previous Purrmann Prize winner and, if possible, a director of a museum, preferably from Rhineland-Palatinate or Baden-Württemberg .
A preselection will be made for both prizes, and part of the overall jury will be responsible for its implementation. When deciding on the sponsorship award, this jury will be headed by the Lord Mayor of the City of Speyer; if it decides on the Grand Prize, by a person appointed by the founder.
Following the award, an exhibition with the applicants' work is regularly held in the Kulturhof Flachsgasse.
