Otfried Helmut Culmann (born March 11, 1949 in Billigheim ) is a German painter , graphic artist , writer and curator for exhibitions of fantastic art.

Life

Otfried H. Culmann was born on March 11, 1949 as the son of the Protestant pastor and Palatinate local poet Hellmut Culmann (1898–1949) in Billigheim / Südpfalz near Landau. From 1964 to 1968 he attended the master school and art school in Kaiserslautern (with Helmut Göring) and from 1968 to 1970 he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich (with Mac Zimmermann). In 1970 he moved to the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart (with Walter Brudi ). 1973 to 1976 he studied again at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and became a master student of Mac Zimmermann. Diploma. In 1976 he was awarded the 1st Mannlich Prize in Munich and the Prize of the Palatinate Friends of Art Association and the Picasso Medal in Kaiserslautern. In 1977 he received a scholarship at the Villa Massimo ( Rome ). The house he was born in, a former parsonage in Billigheim / Palatinate, which also houses a studio, workshops and art gallery, he bought a year later (1978) and in the same year received the Purrmann Prize from the city of Speyer . He received another award in 1979 with the “Young Palatinate Artists” prize from the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Culture. In 1981 his first fantastic novel "The man with the arena in his head" was published. In 1983/84 he received a scholarship at Casa Baldi in Olevano Romano (Italy). His second fantastic novel "Invisible Rooms" appeared in 1986 and 1988 in the monograph Otfried H. Culmann by GR Hocke. In 1996 he is co-founder and on the board of the "Center for Fantastic Arts eV" Bonn / Rolandseck, an international association of fantastic artists, which today bears the name "LABYRINTHE - Society for Fantastic and Visionary Arts eV". In 1997 he received a travel grant from the Palatinate Cultural Foundation for Paris. In 2013 his monograph Otfried H. Culmanns Paris, The Unknown in the Passage appeared in the Edition Daedalus Palatinus, Billigheim-Ingenheim.

He is the most important sponsor of fantastic, surreal and visionary art in Germany and in 1998 conceived and organized the exhibition “Der Faden der Ariadne” for the “Herrenhof” Neustadt / Mussbach and the SWF / 3sat , with over 350 exhibits, one of the largest exhibitions more fantastic contemporary art. A year later (1999) his first extensive monograph, “The Inner Eye”, was published. In 2003 the second monograph “Journey to the Inner Continent” was published. His works have been shown at around 100 solo exhibitions and numerous group exhibitions at home and abroad.
