life and work

Felizitas Mentel has lived in Ludwigshafen am Rhein since her primary school days . From 1964 to 68 she studied graphics at the Free Academy Mannheim with Paul Berger-Bergner . In the 1970s she created graphics, collages and frottage of “industrial landscapes”. In the early 1980s, landscape graphics and collages in an informal style developed from this. In the mid-1980s she began to deal with the subject of light and incorporated it in the form of self-bent neon tubes . In these neon murals from that time, the tubes form the landscape lines and thus emphasize their shape.

Here, as in the purely graphic work of Felizitas Mentel, a change in perspective took place in the following years. Panoramic views were replaced by the focus on landscape details, the horizon lines disappeared completely, especially in the work cycle on the subject of lava fields. In the case of the neon lead folds, only sections of lava landscapes are shown in which the neon tubes represent glowing lava flows breaking through the surface.

Parallel to the examination of landscape forms and the earth's primal forces, another area of work with neon, the neon steel reliefs, developed over the course of time. These are much more abstract, here above all clear forms emerge. The steel bodies are emphasized by the neon tubes, at the same time they form a contrast to their surface and give them color. The last work areas so far are a continuation of the focus on the subject of light. On the one hand, neon lead sculptures were created, on the other hand sculptures made of luminescent Plexiglas as well as installations made of fluorescent glass fiber fleece.
