Martin Mayer (sculptor)
Martin Mayer (born January 16, 1931 in Berlin ) is a German sculptor , graphic artist and draftsman who lives in Munich .
Life
Martin Mayer, born in Berlin, comes from a family in the Palatinate. In 1943 the family moved to Weißenburg in Bavaria . At the age of 15 he became a private student of Theodor Georgii in Munich, the student and son-in-law of Adolf von Hildebrand . From 1949 to 1954 he studied with him at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich , where he developed his own handwriting based on the human figure.
In addition to numerous busts and graphics, he has created around 30 mighty bronze figures for public spaces since the late 1950s: the most famous include the large robed figures, such as the pilgrim of St. James in Speyer and Hastingues, the Luther statues in Landau and Weißenburg , and the Francis in Munich and Mannheim as well as the plump female nudes like his Olympia Triumphans , who stretches out into the sky on her strong arms in the Munich Olympic Park . To this day, women's pictures, such as the Landavia in Landau , the break in Speyer or the hair-washing woman in Munich , are the focus of his work.
Martin Mayer is considered to be one of the last representatives of classic-modern sculpture in the tradition of Auguste Rodin , Aristide Maillol , Marino Marini and Henry Moore . With a few exceptions, his exhibitions are limited to his continuous participation in the Great Art Exhibition in his adopted city of Munich since 1952. Despite the enormous public presence of his sculptural work, he has the status of a great unknown even in the art-historical specialist world.
