Heinrich G. Merkel

Heinrich Georg Merkel (born February 12, 1900 in Trebnitz , Silesia , † October 15, 1985 in Nuremberg ) was a German newspaper and book publisher , co-partner and co-editor of the " Nürnberger Nachrichten " and chairman of the supervisory board of the German news agency (DENA).

Live and act

After attending high school, Merkel studied law and economics at the University of Breslau . After completing his studies, from 1923 to 1933 he was managing director of the “Loan Fund of the German Student Union ” and “Economic Aid”, forerunners of the German Student Union . He later worked in banking, industry and publishing. From 1939 to the beginning of 1945 he worked as a publishing director at the Leipzig music publisher Hans C. Sikorski KG (see Sikorski Musikverlage ), which was created in 1938 from the merger of the expropriated Jewish publishers Anton J. Benjamin, N. Simrock and D. Rahter.

In 1945 he was commissioned by the American occupation authorities , the license for the publication of the Main-Post in Würzburg. On January 1, 1949, Joseph E. Drexel brought him to the Nürnberger Nachrichten as co-editor and co-partner . Merkel was in charge of the publishing and commercial areas there.

When the Federal Republic of Germany emerged from the three western occupation zones in 1949, the licensing requirements and press control were gradually lifted. Now the old publishers who had not received a license up to that point also entered the competition again. In this situation Heinrich G. Merkel made a decisive contribution to the fact that license holders and old publishers - who had previously organized themselves in different bodies - came together in an association.

Merkel was a co-founder of the Association of Bavarian Newspaper Publishers, from 1945 to 1951 its board member, from 1951 to 1965 chairman and then honorary chairman. From 1953 to 1969 he was chairman of the supervisory board of Deutsche Nachrichten AG and from 1951 to 1968 a member of the supervisory board of the Deutsche Presse-Agentur . When on July 7, 1958 the Press Association for New Publication Means e. V. was founded in order to coordinate the interests of the Federal Association of German Newspaper Publishers (BDVZ), its regional associations and parts of the publishers, Heinrich G. Merkel took over the position of chairman of the board until 1979. “The task of the press association was to observe the radio and media landscape and to promote and achieve private participation by publishers in these fields. The press association worked actively with the BDZV and other press associations. ”Since 1968 Merkel was vice-president of the Federal Association of German Newspaper Publishers, Bad Godesberg.

Merkel supported and encouraged students after 1945 on the one hand through his voluntary work at the Nuremberg Student Union and on the other hand also in the Carl Duisberg Society and in the German National Academic Foundation . Because he also made outstanding contributions to the development of the Nuremberg University of Economics and Social Sciences, he was made an honorary senator.

In Breslau, Heinrich G. Merkel was for a time a student of Otto Mueller , one of the “Brücke” painters in the heyday of German Expressionism . Due to his love of art, Merkel took over the chairmanship of the "Society of Friends of the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg", founded in 1980. The Academy later made him an honorary member.

The art, culture and history of his Silesian homeland had a faithful keeper in Heinrich G. Merkel. The organ of the Friends and Patrons of the Silesian Cultural Works Foundation was published by the “ Verlag Nürnberger Presse ”: “Silesia - A quarterly journal for art, science and folklore. Lower Silesia, Upper Silesia, Sudeten Silesia ” .

Merkel was married three times; from his marriages had 4 children.
