Jeremias Kaligiorgis

Jeremias Kaligiorgis ( Greek Ἱερεμίας Καλλιγιώργης - Ieremías Kalligiórgis ; born January 17, 1935 in Kos ) is Metropolitan of Switzerland and Exarch of Europe of the Ecumenical Patriarchate .

He studied from 1948 to 1952 at the Seminary of Patmos, from 1952 to 1959 at the theological school of Halki ( Heybeliada near Istanbul ). He was ordained a deacon on August 9, 1959 and sent to Paris for further study. In 1963 he graduated from the Institut Supérieur de Liturgie of the Institut Catholique de Paris as Peritus Sacrae Liturgiae . He also attended courses in paleography at the Sorbonne .

On July 26, 1964, he was ordained a priest by Metropolitan Meletios of France . He then worked as a priest in the diocese of the Patriarchate in France (Métropole orthodoxe grecque de France), initially as vicar general, from 1971 as titular bishop of Sassima, from 1988 as metropolitan.

From 1992 to 1997 he was Vice President of the Conference of European Churches and from 1997 to 2002 its President.

In January 2002 he was named Knight of the Legion of Honor by the French President .

Since January 20, 2003, he has been Metropolitan of Switzerland with his seat in Geneva and head of the Center orthodoxe du Patriarcat œcuménique in Chambésy near Geneva.
