Egbert Ludovicus Many (born June 17, 1825 in Waterford , Saratoga County , New York , †  April 22, 1902 in New York City ) was an American officer and politician . Between 1885 and 1887 he represented the state of New York in the US House of Representatives ; previously he held the rank of brigadier general in the Union army during the civil war .

Career

Egbert Many first attended the Albany Academy . In 1847 he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point . He was then an officer in the US Army until 1853 . As such, he also took part in the Mexican-American War . When he retired from military service in 1853, he was a first lieutenant . In 1855 he was entrusted as a state engineer of the state of New Jersey with the creation of a topographical map of this state. In addition, he measured the area of ​​what would later become Central Park in New York City, where he was also involved as a planning manager ( engineer-in-chief ). In 1860 he was also captain of the state militia pioneers. During the Civil War between 1861 and 1863 he was Brigadier General of the volunteers who were part of the Union Army. In 1862 he was military governor of the city of Norfolk in occupied Virginia . In 1865, Many designed a topographic map of the city of New York known as the Many Map . He then worked for some time as a planning engineer for the railroad. In 1884 he was New York City Park Commissioner.

Politically, many joined the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1884 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 13th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded John H. Ketcham on March 4, 1885 . Since he was not confirmed in 1886, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1887 . After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Egbert Viel resumed his previous activities. He also dealt with literary matters. He died in New York City on April 22, 1902 and was buried at West Point.
