Vito John Fossella Jr. (born March 9, 1965 on Staten Island , New York City ) is an American politician . Between 1997 and 2009 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Vito Fossella is the great-grandson of Congressman James A. O'Leary (1889–1944). He graduated from Monsignor Farrell High School in Staten Iceland and then in 1987 to the University of Pennsylvania belonging Wharton School . After studying law at Fordham University and being admitted to the bar in 1994, he began working in this profession in New York City. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1994 and 1997 he was a member of the New York City Council .

After the resignation of MP Susan Molinari , Fossella was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the due by-election for the 13th seat of New York , where he took up his new mandate on November 4, 1997. After five re-elections, he could remain in Congress until January 3, 2009 . During his time as a congressman, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell . Fossella was a member of the Energy and Trade Committee and three sub-committees. He was very conservative by New York standards. Since 2005, Fossella has been in the headlines because of its high campaign costs, but also because of dubious campaign methods. In 2008 there was an extra-marital affair. He then announced that he wanted to end his current term in Congress. At the same time, however, he decided not to run again in the 2008 elections. He then put this plan into action.
