John A. Griswold

John Ashley Griswold (born November 18, 1822 in Cairo , New York , † February 22, 1902 in Catskill , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1869 and 1871 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Ashley Griswold was born and raised in Cairo, Greene County , approximately seven and a half years after the end of the British-American War . During this time he attended community schools and the academies in Prattsville and Catskill . He studied law . He was admitted to the bar in 1848 and then began practicing in Greene County. Griswold was a District Attorney in Greene County from 1856 to 1859 and a District Judge from 1863 to 1867. Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

In the 1868 congressional election for the 41st Congress , Griswold was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 13th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Thomas Cornell on March 4, 1869 . Since he on a run again in 1870 renounced, he left the after March 3, 1871 Congress of.

After his time at Congress he went back to his practice as a lawyer. In 1871 he was elected supervisor in the town of Catskill. In 1894 he took part in the New York Constituent Assembly . He died on February 22, 1902 in Catskill and was then buried in Catskill Village Cemetery .
