John R. Drake

John Reuben Drake (born November 28, 1782 in Pleasant Valley , New York , † March 21, 1857 in Owego , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1817 and 1819 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Reuben Drake was born in Pleasant Valley, Dutchess County during the Revolutionary War . He completed his preliminary studies. Then he went about commercial business and worked in agriculture. In 1813 he was Suptervisor of the Town of Owego in Tioga County . He was First Judge in Broome County from 1815 to 1823 . During this time he was a member of the New York State Assembly from 1817 to 1819 .

As an opponent of an overly strong central government, he joined the Democratic-Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson at that time . In the 1816 congressional election for the 15th Congress , he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 15th constituency of New York , where he succeeded James Birdsall and Jabez D. Hammond on March 4, 1817 , who had previously represented the district in the US House of Representatives together. He retired from the after March 3, 1819 Congress of.

Between 1833 and 1838 he was a judge on the Court of Common Pleas for Tioga County. During this time he sat again in the New York State Assembly in 1834. Between 1841 and 1845 he was President of the Village of Owego. He died on March 21, 1857 in Owego and was then buried in Evergreen Cemetery .
