Edward Dodd

Edward Dodd (born August 25, 1805 in Salem , New York , † March 1, 1891 in Argyle , New York) was an American politician . Between 1855 and 1859 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Edward Dodd was born and raised in Salem, Washington County approximately seven years before the outbreak of the British-American War . During this time he attended public schools. Then he went about commercial business. In 1835 he moved to Argyle. He was from 1835 to 1844 town clerk ( county clerk ) in Washington County. As a delegate, he took part in the Constituent Assembly of New York in 1846 .

In the congressional elections of 1854 for the 34th Congress Dodd was elected for the opposition party in the 15th constituency of New York to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Charles Hughes on March 4, 1855 . As a congressman, he presided over the Committee on District of Columbia during that tenure . In the following time he joined the Republican Party . In 1856 he was elected to the 35th Congress . In April 1863 he became US Marshal for the northern district of New York - a position he held until April 1863. He served as the County Post editor for 30 years and as a trustee at Argyle Academy for 51 years . He also served as President in the Village of Argyle for eight years. He sat on the Republican State Committee for many years . He died on March 1, 1891 in Argyle and was then buried in Prospect Hill Cemetery .
