Harmanus Peek

Harmanus Peek (born June 24, 1782 in Albany , New York , † September 27, 1838 in Schenectady , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1819 and 1821 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Harmanus Peek was born and raised in Albany during the War of Independence . He completed his undergraduate studies and graduated from Union College in Schenectady in 1804 . Then he studied law . After receiving his license to practice law, he began practicing in Schenectady. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1816 and 1817 .

As an opponent of an overly strong central government, he joined the Democratic-Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson at that time . In the 1818 congressional elections for the 16th Congress , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 13th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Thomas Lawyer on March 4, 1819 . Since he on a run again in 1820 renounced, he left the after March 3, 1821 Congress of. As a congressman, he chaired the Department of State's Committee on Expenditures .

He died on September 27, 1838 in Schenectady and was then buried in the Dutch Church Cemetery . His remains were later reburied in Vale Cemetery .
