Gaylord Griswold

Gaylord Griswold (born December 18, 1767 in Windsor , Colony of Connecticut , † March 1, 1809 in Herkimer , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1803 and 1805 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Gaylord Griswold was born and raised in Windsor, Hartford County , during the British colonial era . He pursued classical studies and graduated from Yale College in 1787 . Griswold studied law . He was admitted to the bar in 1790 and then began practicing in Windsor. In 1792 he moved to Herkimer. He was a member of the New York State Assembly between 1796 and 1798 . Politically he belonged to the Federalist Party . In the 1802 congressional elections for the 8th Congress , Griswold was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 15th constituency of New York , where he began his service as the first representative of the district in the US House of Representatives on March 4, 1803 . After his congress time he went back to his practice as a lawyer in Herkimer, where he died on March 1, 1809. His body was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery .
