John Sanford (politician, 1803)

John Sanford (born June 3, 1803 in Roxbury , Connecticut , † October 4, 1857 in Amsterdam , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1841 and 1843 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Sanford was born and raised in Roxbury in the early 19th century. During this time he enjoyed a good education. In 1821 he moved to Amsterdam in Montgomery County . Sanford taught at schools in Amsterdam and later in Mayfield , where he also did commercial business. He returned to Amsterdam and pursued commercial business until 1840. Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

In the 1840 congressional elections for the 27th Congress , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 15th constituency of New York , where he succeeded Peter Joseph Wagner on March 4, 1841 . He retired from the after March 3, 1843 Congress of.

After his time at Congress, he founded a carpet manufacture in New York, but the factory was destroyed by fire in 1849. Then he retired from active business life. He died on October 4, 1857 in Amsterdam and was then buried in Green Hill Cemetery .

He was the son of Sarah Curtis (1771-1856) and Stephen Sanford I (1769-1848). His brother, Nehemiah Curtis Sanford (1792-1841), was the father of Henry Shelton Sanford (1823-1891), who was US envoy to Belgium and founded the city of Sanford ( Florida ). John Sanford married Mary Slack (1803-1888), daughter of Rachel Winche and John Slack, on August 3, 1822, in their native Amsterdam. The couple had six children, three daughters and three sons:
