Stephen Sanford

Stephen Sanford (born May 26, 1826 in Mayfield , New York , † February 13, 1913 in Amsterdam , New York) was an American politician . Between 1869 and 1871 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives . Congressman John Sanford (1803-1857) was his father and Congressman John Sanford (1851-1939) was his son.

Career

Stephen Sanford attended community schools and the local academy in Amsterdam. Then he went to Georgetown College in Washington, DC for two years and later to the United States Military Academy at West Point . He worked as a manufacturer of carpets from 1844 until his death. Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party .

In the congressional elections of 1868 for the 41st Congress , Sanford was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington DC in the 18th electoral district of New York, where he succeeded James M. Marvin on March 4, 1869 . Since he on a run again in 1870 renounced, he left the after March 3, 1871 Congress of.

As a delegate, he took part in the Republican National Convention in Cincinnati in 1876 . He died in Amsterdam on February 13, 1913 and was then buried in Green Hill Cemetery .
