Abraham P. Grant

Abraham Phineas Grant (born April 5, 1804 in New Lebanon , New York , † December 11, 1871 in Oswego , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1837 and 1839 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Abraham Phineas Grant was born in New Lebanon, Columbia County , about eight years before the outbreak of the British-American War . He attended public schools and then graduated from Hamilton College in Clinton . Then he studied law . He was admitted to the bar in 1828 and then began practicing in Oswego. As a district attorney, he served in 1835 in Oswego County . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

In the 1836 congressional election for the 25th Congress , Grant was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 17th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Joel Turrill and Rutger B. Miller on March 4, 1837 , who had previously represented the district in the US House of Representatives together. He retired from the after March 3, 1839 Congress of.

After his time at Congress, he worked as a lawyer. He died on December 11, 1871 in Oswego and was buried in Riverside Cemetery . At that point the civil war had ended for about six and a half years.
