George A. Simmons

George Abel Simmons (born September 8, 1791 in Lyme , Grafton County , New Hampshire , † October 27, 1857 in Keeseville , New York ) was an American politician .

Career

George Simmons attended the county school. He graduated from Dartmouth College in Hanover in 1816 . Then he moved to Lansingburgh (New York) and worked there as a principal at the local academy. He studied law , was admitted to the bar in 1825, and then began practicing in Keeseville.

Simmons was a member of the New York State Assembly between 1840 and 1842 . In 1846 he took part as a delegate to the New York Constituent Assembly . Simmons was elected as Whig in the 33rd US Congress and re - elected as the Opposition Party candidate in the 34th Congress . He was there in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1853 to March 3, 1857. During this time he presided over the Judiciary Committee (34th Congress). Simmons decided not to run for re-election in 1856 and returned to his practice as a lawyer in Keeseville after his second term, where he died in 1857 and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery .
