James G. Donovan (1951)

James George Donovan (born December 15, 1898 in Clinton , Massachusetts , † April 6, 1987 in New York City ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1951 and 1957 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James George Donovan was born in Clinton, Worcester County , about four months after the end of the Spanish-American War . He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge in 1916 and 1917 . During the First World War he served as a seaman ( seaman ) in the US Navy . He attended from 1919 to 1921, the Harvard University and graduated in 1924 at the Law School of Columbia University in New York City. He was admitted to the bar in Massachusetts in 1923 and in New York in 1925. He began practicing in New York City in 1925. Between 1934 and 1941 he served as an under-sheriff in New York County . He served in the New York Senate in 1943 and 1944 . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

In the 1950 congressional election for the 82nd Congress , Donovan was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 18th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Martin J. Kennedy on January 4, 1951 . He was re-elected twice in a row. In 1956 he suffered a defeat when he ran for re-election and resigned from Congress on January 3, 1957 .

After his time at Congress he went back to his practice as a lawyer. In 1957 he was New York State Director in the Federal Housing Administration . He lived in New York City until his death on April 6, 1987. His body was then interred in Woodlawn Cemetery .
