William T. Pheiffer

William Townsend Pheiffer (born July 15, 1898 in Purcell , Oklahoma Territory , †  August 16, 1986 in New York City ) was an American politician . Between 1941 and 1943 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives ; from 1953 to 1957 he was the United States Ambassador to the Dominican Republic .

Career

William Pheiffer attended the public schools in his home country and then studied at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles . In 1918, he served during the final stages of World War I in the US Army . After a subsequent law degree at the University of Oklahoma in Norman and his admission as a lawyer in 1919, he began to work in Sayre in this profession. Between 1926 and 1939 he lived in Amarillo ( Texas ), where he also practiced law. He then moved to New York City. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . In June 1932 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago , where President Herbert Hoover was nominated for re-election, which was unsuccessful.

In the 1940 congressional elections , Pheiffer was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 16th  electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Democrat James H. Fay on January 3, 1941 . Since he was not confirmed in 1942, he could only complete one term in Congress until January 3, 1943 . This was shaped by the events of the Second World War . In 1943 and 1944, Pheiffer took part in this war as a captain in the US Army. He then worked between August 1, 1944 and April 22, 1944 for the war-related fuel administration of the federal government ( Petroleum Administration for War ). He then practiced again as a private lawyer. Between 1945 and 1948 he was also an Executive Assistant at the Republican National Committee .

From 1953 to 1957 Pheiffer served as the US ambassador to the Dominican Republic. He died on August 16, 1986 in New York City.
