John F. Carew

John Francis Carew (born April 16, 1873 in Williamsburg , New York , † April 10, 1951 in Rockville Center , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1913 and 1929 he represented the state of New York in the US House of Representatives . Congressman Thomas F. Magner was his uncle.

Career

John Francis Carew was born in Williamsburg about eight years after the Civil War ended . He attended public schools in the then still independent city of Brooklyn and New York City . He then went to the College of the City of New York (now New York University ). He graduated from Columbia College (now Columbia University ) in 1893 and Columbia University Law School in 1896 . He was admitted to the bar in 1897 and then began practicing in New York City. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1904 . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Partyon. As a delegate, he took part in all Democratic State Conventions and Democratic National Conventions from 1912 to 1924.

In the 1912 congressional election for the 63rd Congress , Carew was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 17th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Henry George Jr. on March 4, 1913 . He was re-elected twice in a row. In 1918 he ran for the 66th Congress in the 18th electoral district of New York . After a successful election, he succeeded George B. Francis on March 4, 1919 . He was re-elected five times in a row. On December 28, 1929, he resigned from his seat in Congress for an appointment as judge on the New York Supreme Court .

In November 1930 he was elected for a 14-year term as a judge at the New York Supreme Court, but he only held the post until December 31, 1943, when he reached the age limit. He then worked there as Official Referee . He died on April 10, 1951 in Rockville Center and was then buried in Calvary Cemetery in Queens County .
