Westel Willoughby junior (born November 20, 1769 in Goshen , Colony of Connecticut , † October 3, 1844 in Newport , New York ) was an American doctor and politician . Between 1815 and 1817 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Westel Willoughby Jr. was born in Goshen, Connecticut , about seven years before the War of Independence . He moved to Newport in Herkimer County . Willoughby studied medicine and then practiced. In 1805 he was appointed judge on the Court of Common Pleas in Herkimer County - a position he held until 1821. Willoughby was President of the Herkimer County Medical Society from 1806 to 1816 and from 1818 to 1836 . He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1808 and 1809 . Between 1812 and 1844 he held the post of President of the College of Physicians and Surgeons for Western District of New York . He served in the New York Militia , where he was a member of the medical staff, and in this position took part in the British-American War .

As an opponent of an overly strong central government, he joined the Democratic-Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson at that time . In the 1814 congressional election for the 14th Congress , William Stephens Smith was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 17th constituency of New York . Willoughby successfully contested his election and served in Congress from December 13, 1815 through March 3, 1817.

He founded the Town of Willoughby ( Ohio ) and Willoughby College (now part of Syracuse University ). He died on October 3, 1844 in Newport and was then buried in the First Baptist Church Cemetery . The Mexican-American War broke out about two years later .
