William L. Ward

William Lukens Ward (born September 2, 1856 in Pemberwick , Connecticut , † July 16, 1933 in New York City ) was an American politician . Between 1897 and 1899 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Lukens Ward was born in Pemberwick in the town of Greenwich , Fairfield County , about five years before the outbreak of the Civil War . The family moved to Port Chester , Westchester County , in 1863 . He attended Friends Seminary in New York City and graduated from Columbia College Mining School in New York City in 1878 . He then went to Port Chester to make bolts, nuts and rivets.

Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party . He was chairman of the Republican State Committee for several years . In the 1896 congressional elections for the 55th Congress , Ward was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 16th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Benjamin L. Fairchild on March 4, 1897 . He retired from the after March 3, 1899 Congress of.

After his time at Congress he went back to his previous manufacturing activities in Port Chester. Between 1904 and 1912 he sat on the Republican National Committee . He died on July 16, 1933 in New York City and was buried in the family mausoleum at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla .
