Orange Ferriss (born November 26, 1814 in Glens Falls , New York , † April 11, 1894 ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1867 and 1871 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Orange Ferriss was born and raised in Glens Falls, Warren County , during the British-American War . He completed his preparatory studies and attended the University of Vermont at Burlington . Then he studied law . He was admitted to the bar in 1840 and then began practicing in Glens Falls. He served as a justice of the peace between 1838 and 1841 and between 1845 and 1848. He was also an inspector at public schools in 1839 and 1840. Between 1839 and 1842 he worked as a corporation clerk . He then served as a district judge and guardianship and probate judge ( surrogate ) in Warren County between 1851 and 1863 .

Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party . In the congressional election of 1866 for the 40th Congress , Ferriss was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 16th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Robert S. Hale on March 4, 1867 . He was re-elected once. Since he on a run again in 1870 renounced, he left the after March 3, 1871 Congress of. As a congressman, he chaired the Committee on Mines and Mining ( 41st Congress ).

President Ulysses S. Grant appointed him Commissioner of Southern Claims - a position he held from 1871 to 1877. On May 12, 1880, he became Second Auditor of the Treasury . Ferriss held the post until his resignation on June 19, 1885. He retired and lived in Glens Falls. He died there on April 11, 1894 and was buried in the cemetery of the same name.
