George Petrie (born September 8, 1793 in Little Falls , New York , † May 8, 1879 there ) was an American politician . Between 1847 and 1849 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Petrie was born and raised in Little Falls, Herkimer County , about ten years after the War of Independence . He attended community schools. In the 1846 congressional elections for the 30th Congress , Petrie was elected as an independent Democrat in the 17th constituency of New York to the House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Charles S. Benton on March 4, 1847 . He retired from the after March 3, 1849 Congress of. On January 1, 1869, he began to work in the Post Office Department in Washington DC - a position he held until his resignation on August 31, 1875. He died in Little Falls on May 8, 1879 and was buried in Church Street Cemetery .
