John H. Ketcham

John Henry Ketcham (born December 21, 1832 in Dover Plains , New York , † November 4, 1906 in New York City ) was an American politician . Between 1865 and 1873, between 1877 and 1893 and between 1897 and 1906 he represented the state of New York in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Henry Ketcham had an academic career. He graduated from Suffield Academy in Connecticut . Then he went to agricultural activities. He was a supervisor in Dutchess County in 1854 and 1855 . In 1856 and 1857 he sat in the New York State Assembly and in 1860 and 1861 in the New York Senate . During the Civil War he enlisted in the US Army . On October 11, 1862, he joined the 150th  regiment of the New York Volunteer Infantry as a Colonel . It was on December 6, 1864 Brevet - Brigadier promoted, on 1 April 1865 then to brigadier general, and finally on March 13, 1865. Brevet- Major General of Volunteers. Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party .

In the congressional election of 1864 for the 39th Congress , Ketcham was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 12th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Homer Augustus Nelson on March 4, 1865 . He was re-elected three times in a row. 1872 he suffered a defeat in its fourth re-election bid and was eliminated from the after March 3, 1873 Congress of. In the 42nd Congress he chaired the Committee on Public Lands .

He took part in 1876 and 1896 as a delegate to the Republican National Conventions in Cincinnati and St. Louis . On July 3, 1874, he became a commissioner in the District of Columbia - a post he held until his resignation on June 30, 1877.

In 1876 he ran in the 13th constituency of New York for the 45th Congress . After a successful election, he succeeded John O. Whitehouse on March 4, 1877 . He was re-elected three times in a row. In the congressional elections of 1884 he was elected in the 16th electoral district of New York in the 49th Congress , where he succeeded Thomas J. Van Alstyne on March 4, 1885 . He was re-elected three times in a row. Since he refused to run for re-election in 1892 , he left Congress after March 3, 1893. Ketcham ran in 1896 in the 18th electoral district of New York for the 55th Congress . After a successful election, he succeeded Jacob LeFever on March 4, 1897 . He was re-elected twice in a row. In the congressional elections of 1902 he was elected to the 58th Congress in the 21st constituency of New York , where he succeeded John Knox Stewart on March 4, 1903 . Ketcham was re-elected once and died in New York City on November 4, 1906 during his final term. He presided over the Committee on Expenditures in the Department of State between the 57th and 59th Congresses . His body was then interred in Valley View Cemetery in Dover Plains.
