Christopher Patrick "Chris" Gibson (* 13. May 1964 in Rockville Center , Nassau County , New York ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . From 2011 to 2017 he represented parts of Upstate New York in the United States House of Representatives .

Family, education and work

Chris Gibson attended Ichabod Crane High School in Kinderhook and then until 1986 Siena College in Loudonville . Between 1981 and 1986 he was a member of his state's National Guard and from 1986 to 2010 he was an officer in the United States Army , where he made it to the rank of colonel. During his military service he studied until 1998 at Cornell University in Ithaca . As a soldier, he was deployed in Iraq and Kosovo , among others . He received numerous military awards, including four times the Bronze Star and twice the Legion of Merit . Eventually he became a faculty member of the United States Military Academy at West Point , where he taught American politics .

Gibson is married with three children.

Political career

In the 2010 election , Gibson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 20th  Congressional constituency of New York , where he succeeded the previously defeated Democrat Scott Murphy on January 3, 2011 . In 2012 he was re-elected after a redesign of the constituencies in the 19th congressional electoral district with 53 to 47 percent of the vote against Julian Schreibman.

Gibson served on the Agriculture Committee and the Armed Forces Committee and four subcommittees. Within the party, he is a member of both the conservative Republican Study Committee and the moderate Republican Main Street Partnership .

After being re-elected in 2014, he did not stand for election in 2016 and left Congress on January 3, 2017. His successor was his party colleague John Faso . Gibson was under discussion as a candidate for his state's governor in 2018.
