Christopher Gibson (* 27. December 1992 in Karkkila ) is a Finnish professional ice hockey goaltender who since September 2015, the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League is under contract and in parallel for their farm team , the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in the American Hockey League play .
Career
Gibson was born the son of an artist and kickboxer from the island of St. Lucia and a Finnish woman in Karkkila and grew up in Espoo , where he was active in the junior division of the Espoo Blues . At the age of 15 in 2008 Gibson moved to the Canadian province of Saskatchewan and enrolled there at the Athol Murray College of Notre Dame in Wilcox - a school with an outstanding ice hockey promotion. With the team he played in the 2008/09 season in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League .
For the 2009/10 season Gibson joined the Saguenéens de Chicoutimi from the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec , who had selected him the previous summer in the CHL Import Draft . The goalkeeper spent a total of four years with the French Canadians and was selected during this time in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft in the second round in 49th place by the Los Angeles Kings . After the Kings had not managed to contract the Finn within two years, he decided to run again in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft . Instead, however, the Toronto Maple Leafs used the opportunity and secured the services of the goalkeeper for the following three years, so that at the beginning of the 2013/14 season he ran up for their farm team , the Toronto Marlies , in the American Hockey League . He also played a few games for the Orlando Solar Bears in the ECHL . Gibson was unable to play with the Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League until he joined the New York Islanders in September 2015. In exchange for Michael Grabner , Toronto gave Gibson and four other young talents to New York - namely Taylor Beck , Carter Verhaeghe , Tom Nilsson and Matthew Finn .
In the organization of the Islanders, Gibson was mostly active for the AHL farm team, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers , during the 2015/16 season . He finally made his NHL debut in January 2016, before three more appearances followed the following April. In August 2016, New York's expired contract was extended by a year, as was the year after.
International
On the international stage, Gibson played at the 2010 U18 World Junior Championship in Belarus and the 2012 U20 World Junior Championship in Canada . He won the bronze medal at the U18 Junior World Championship, where he was the third goalkeeper behind Jonathan Iilahti and Sami Aittokallio . At the U20 Junior World Championship he came as a substitute for Aittokallio on two missions. Finland finished the tournament in fourth place.
