Michael René Grabner (born October 5, 1987 in Villach ) is an Austrian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Arizona Coyotes from the National Hockey League since July 2018 .
Career
Grabner began his career at EC VSV , where he made his debut in the fighting team in the 2003/04 season at the age of only 16. In the same season he played for Austria in the U18 World Cup . After this season he moved to the Spokane Chiefs in the Western Hockey League , who had drawn him in the 1st round of the CHL Import Draft .
Although he missed the WHL playoffs with his team in two previous seasons, he was still able to attract NHL observers' attention, especially in the 2005/06 season, where he posted 36 goals and 14 assists in 67 games. With 15th place in the North America ranking, he was the most promising Austrian talent in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft and was drawn as number 14 by the Vancouver Canucks in the first round . In his first preparation game for the Canucks, he also scored a goal. After a season with the Spokane Chiefs, Grabner was back in the Vancouver Canucks training camp in 2007. In the 4-0 in a preparatory game against the Calgary Flames on September 19, 2007 Grabner contributed a hit and an assist and was voted the second best player of the evening.
After good performance with the farm team, Grabner was appointed to the Vancouver Canucks squad on October 14, 2009, where he should replace the injured Swedish winger Daniel Sedin . Exactly a week later, he scored his first goal in the NHL from a power play situation. The opposing goalkeeper Antti Niemi had no chance; the game ended in a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks . In early November he suffered a broken ankle while warming up before the game against the Atlanta Thrashers , which forced him to take a break of several weeks. After the injury, he had to go back to the farm team in Manitoba until he was finally called back to the NHL squad in mid-March. The first NHL hat-trick of his career he scored in the 5-4 win of the Canucks after penalty shootout in Anaheim on April 2, 2010. His first playoff hit in the NHL, he scored on May 1, 2010 in a 5-1 win at the Chicago Blackhawks.
After the 2009/10 season , Grabner moved to the Florida Panthers as part of an exchange deal . After the preparatory games, however, he was put out of the NHL team and sent to Florida's farm team , the Rochester Americans , in the American Hockey League. Even before he was accepted into the contingent, General Manager Garth Snow took the opportunity to get the winger into the New York Islanders squad before the waiver period expired . In his rookie season he knew how to convince and was the top scorer among the rookies with 34 goals. In the course of the season he had scored six underpaid goals, these were the second most this season after Frans Nielsen (7). With 52 points, Grabner was the fourth best scorer of the Islanders, who again missed participation in the playoffs. After the end of the regular season, the Austrian was nominated for the Calder Memorial Trophy together with Logan Couture and Jeff Skinner .
In May 2011 Grabner extended his contract with the New York Islanders by five years until the end of June 2016. In September 2015, however, he was given to the Toronto Maple Leafs , which in return Taylor Beck , Carter Verhaeghe , Tom Nilsson , Matthew Finn and Christopher Gibson transferred to New York. His contract, which expired at the end of the 2015/16 season, was not renewed by the Maple Leafs, so he joined the New York Rangers as a free agent in July 2016 .
In the main round of 2016/17, Michael Grabner temporarily led the scorers list of the NHL and finished the basic round with 27 goals and 13 assists, which put him in 39th place in the league.
In February 2018, the Rangers handed him over to the New Jersey Devils shortly before the trade deadline and in return received Yegor Rykow and a second-round vote for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft . Grabner had scored 56 goals and 21 assists for the Rangers by this time and is one of only eleven players who were under contract with all three NHL clubs in the New York area. The Devils did not renew his contract, which expired in the summer of 2018, so he signed a three-year contract with the Arizona Coyotes in July 2018 .
International
Grabner took part with Austria in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. He scored a hat trick against Finland and two more goals in the last group game against Norway, where he also set up goals. In the end there were 5 goals and 1 assist, which earned him 5th place in the scorer ranking. He was also the tournament's top scorer , together with Phil Kessel from Team USA. This makes him the first Austrian to be at the top of the top scorer list in one of the two most important competitions, the World Cup and the Olympic Games.
