Antti Raanta (born May 12, 1989 in Rauma ) is a Finnish ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Arizona Coyotes in the National Hockey League since June 2017 . Before that, he spent two years each with the Chicago Blackhawks and the New York Rangers , winning the Stanley Cup with Chicago in 2015 .
Career
Antti Raanta started ice hockey in his hometown near Lukko and went through all the youth teams there. From 2003 he played for the U16, from 2005 for the U18 and from 2006 for the U20 junior team of the club. In March 2008, Raanta received a three-year contract from his home club. In the 2008/09 season he was statistically one of the best goalkeepers in the junior SM-liiga and reached third place in the championship with Lukko. Because of these achievements, he was accepted into the club's extended professional squad before the 2009/10 season. On September 22nd, 2009 he made his debut in the SM-liiga in a 7-3 win over the Pelicans . Overall, he completed 15 SM liiga games in the 2009/10 season as the second goalkeeper behind Petri Vehanen and Mikael Tellqvist . In the following season he increased his ice age to a total of 20 main round games and was also used twice in the play-offs.
In April 2011 he turned his back on Lukko and moved to Porin Ässät , where he immediately became the goalkeeper. In the 2012/13 season he helped his team with statistical top marks - a Gegentorschnitt of 1.85 in the main round and 1.33 in the play-offs - for the first win of the SM-liiga since 1978. He was also the Lasse- Oksanen trophy as the best player in the main round and the Jari Kurri trophy as the best player in the play-offs. On May 2, 2013, he signed a two-year contract with Helsingfors IFK .
In July 2013, following the World Cup , he was signed by the Chicago Blackhawks . After first playing in the AHL at the Rockford IceHogs , he was appointed to the NHL squad for the first time in November 2013 and made his NHL debut on November 27 against Calgary .
At the end of the 2014/15 season, the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup and had his name engraved on it, even though he had not met the automatic criteria (e.g. 41 games in the regular season) for it; he acted as a second goalkeeper in 54 games and played 14 missions himself. After two years in the organization of the Blackhawks, they handed him over to the New York Rangers in June 2015 and received Ryan Haggerty in return . In New York, Raanta acted as the second goalkeeper behind Henrik Lundqvist before he and Derek Stepan were handed over to the Arizona Coyotes in June 2017 . In return, the Rangers received Anthony DeAngelo and a first-round vote for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft . Although the Coyotes clearly missed the playoffs in the following season 2017/18, the Finn was among the best goalkeepers in the league with a catch rate of 93.0% and an average goal against 2.24 . He then signed a new three-year contract in Arizona in April 2018, which should earn him an average annual salary of $ 4.25 million. However, he missed most of the following season 2018/19 due to injury.
International
In April 2013 Raanta was appointed to the squad of the Finnish national team for the 2013 World Cup due to the performances shown in the SM-liiga . At the tournament itself he made his international debut against Slovakia on May 4, 2013 and celebrated his first international shutout .
