Nicholas "Nick" Schmaltz (born February 23, 1996 in Madison , Wisconsin ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Arizona Coyotes from the National Hockey League since November 2018 and plays for them on the position of the center . His older brother Jordan is also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Nick Schmaltz was born in Madison and grew up in Verona, a few kilometers away, with his brother Jordan , who is also a professional ice hockey player and has been a member of the St. Louis Blues organization since 2015 . In his youth Nick Schmaltz played for the Chicago Mission and from 2012 for the Green Bay Gamblers in the United States Hockey League (USHL), the highest junior league in the United States. In the 2012/13 season, the attacker scored 52 points in 64 games and was therefore elected to the USHL's all-rookie team . After representing his home country at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games , he and Team USA won the silver medal at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in summer 2013 . After another season with the Gamblers, during which he also briefly for two games in the squad of the USA Hockey National Team Development Program had heard him chose the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft at 20th position.

Schmaltz then enrolled at the University of North Dakota, following his brother Jordan. The center spent two years at UND , where he was elected as a freshman to the all-rookie team of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference . He also took part in the U20 World Championships in 2015 and 2016 with the U20 national team and won the bronze medal in the latter.

In June 2016 Schmaltz signed an entry contract with the Chicago Blackhawks and made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) at the beginning of the 2016/17 season . After the season Schmaltz also made his debut in the senior national team of the USA , with which he finished fifth at the 2017 World Cup . Schmaltz cracked the 50 scorer point mark in his second NHL season before he was given to the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for Dylan Strome and Brendan Perlini after a good start to the 2018/19 game year .

Schmaltz signed a new seven-year contract with the Coyotes in March 2019, which should bring him an average annual salary of 5.85 million US dollars from the start of the 2019/20 season.
