Four ice hockey competitions were held at the 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck in 2012 . Five teams competed in the boys 'tournament, the girls' tournament was played with as many national teams. In addition, further individual medals were awarded in both gender classes in a so-called skills challenge .

The games were played three-thirds of 15 minutes instead of the usual 20 minutes. The total playing time per game was reduced from 60 to 45 minutes.

Venues

The games of the boys 'and girls' tournament were played in Innsbruck, in the Tyrolean Ice Arena , the home stadium of the EBEL club HC Innsbruck , known as the Tiroler Wasserkraft Arena . The hall has space for 3,200 spectators.

Boys

There were two choices for the boys. On the one hand, the skills challenge for individual athletes on January 19, 2012 with a total of 16 participants. On the other hand, the main tournament, the finals of which took place on January 22, 2012.

Skills challenge

For the boys' skills challenge, the 16 qualified participants first qualified on January 16, 2012 in the categories fastest lap (S1) , shot accuracy (S2) , mobility (S3) , hardest shot (S4) , accuracy of pass (S5) and puck control (S6) . There the best eight participants qualified for the final on January 19th. There the medals were awarded via points in the six competitions that were held in the knockout system.

In order to determine the 16 participants in the qualification, the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF carried out a global qualification program, the final of which took place in July 2011 in Vierumäki , Finland . All players born in 1996 were eligible to participate.

qualification

According to their placement in the individual competitions, the participants in the first eight places received points in the reverse order of their placement. The competition winner thus received eight points, the second seven, the third six, etc. The eight participants with the most points after completing the six individual disciplines made it into the final. In the event of a tie, the highest placement in one of the individual competitions decided.
