Joseph "Joe" Hicketts (born May 4, 1996 in Kamloops , British Columbia ) is a Canadian ice hockey player . He has been under contract with the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League (NHL) since September 2014 and also works for their farm team , the Grand Rapids Griffins , in the American Hockey League (AHL).

Career

Joe Hicketts played in youth in Kamloops Jardine Blazers before the Bantam Draft of the Western Hockey League in 15th place from the (WHL) in 2011 Victoria Royals selected. The following season Hicketts spent in the Okanagan Hockey Academy before he was first used for the Royals in the 2012/13 WHL season . The defender played a total of 67 games in regular time, in which he scored 24 points . In the following season 2013/14 he was appointed assistant captain in Victoria , but he missed half of the season due to an operation in October 2013.

In the 2014 NHL Entry Draft , Joe Hicketts was not considered, but shortly afterwards he was invited to a Detroit Red Wings training camp for undrafted players. He was then included in the Red Wings team for the NHL Prospects Tournament in Traverse City , Michigan , and then took part in their training camp. On September 24, 2014, Hicketts signed a three-year entry - level contract in Detroit , before being sent back to Victoria on October 2, 2014. He spent the 2014/15 season in the Western Hockey League, where he scored 12 goals and 52 assists in 62 games for the Victoria Royals, making him the second most successful defender in the league. Because of this performance, he was elected to the WHL West Second All-Star Team .

In 2015, Hicketts again took part in the NHL Prospects Tournament and the Detroit Red Wings training camp before he was sent back to the Victoria Royals on September 21, 2015. The 2015/16 season was personally the best season for Hicketts, with 61 points scorer in 59 games. With a total of 53 assists, he was again the second best defender according to templates. In addition, with 173 scorer points, he became the club's defender with the most scorer points. After the season, Hicketts was elected to the WHL West First All-Star Team and was named Western Conference Top Defender and Western Conference Player of the Year . So he was also nominated for the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy as best player in the Western Hockey League, which, however, eventually went to Dryden Hunt . After the Victoria Royals were eliminated in the playoff games, Hicketts took part in the playoffs for the Calder Cup with the Grand Rapids Griffins , the farm team of the Detroit Red Wings .

From the 2016/17 season , Hicketts was regularly used for the Grand Rapids Griffins and won the Calder Cup at the end of the season with a win over the Syracuse Crunch in the playoff final . The defender also began the 2017/18 season at the Griffins, before joining the Detroit Red Wings squad on January 21, 2018. There he made his NHL debut the following day in the game against the New Jersey Devils . After this game, Hicketts was initially sent back to Grand Rapids, only to be called back to Detroit on March 26, 2018. There he came in the game against the Pittsburgh Penguins to his first two assists in the National Hockey League. In total, Hicketts played five games for the Red Wings in the 2017/18 season . On October 31, 2018, Hicketts was sent back to the Grand Rapids Griffins, for which he will be back in the American Hockey League in 2018/19 .

International

In 2012, Hicketts was the captain of the Canadian national ice hockey team , with which he won the bronze medal at the Winter Youth Olympic Games . The following year, the defender took part with Team Canada Pacific , again as team captain, in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge , where he only led the team to fifth place. Also in 2013 he won the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament with the Canadian national team with a 4-0 victory in the final against the team from the United States .

At the U18 World Cup in 2014 , Hicketts played seven games and scored four points, most recently he won the bronze medal with the team by beating Sweden in the game for third place. In 2015 he was part of the Canadian U20 national ice hockey team , which won the U20 World Championship with a contested 5-4 victory in the final of the U20 Junior World Championship against the Russian selection . In 2016, the defender took part in the U20 World Cup again, but only finished sixth there with the team.
