The 39th Ice Hockey World Championships of the U20 Juniors of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF were the ice hockey world championships of 2015 in the age group of under-20s (U20). Between December 7, 2014 and January 25, 2015, a total of 39 national teams took part in the six tournaments of the top division and divisions I to III.

The world champions became the 16th time the Canadian team , which defeated the Russian team 5-4 in the final . It was the Canadians' first title since 2009 in this age group. The Switzerland and Germany occupied in the top division in each case the last place in their preliminary group and had to compete against each other in the relegation games. The Swiss team won both games 5-2 and was thus able to stay in the league, while the German team had to relegate to Division I after three years in the top division. Austria finished fifth in Group A of Division I and avoided relegation to Group B by just one point compared to Slovenia.

Participants, venues and periods

mode

The ice hockey world championship is played in a total of six tournaments with different levels of participants. The top division plays with ten teams, divisions I and II with twelve each and division III with six participants.

In Divisions I and II, the twelve teams are divided into two groups of six teams. Division III should actually be played in a group of six teams, whereby an optional qualification should be organized depending on the number of registered participants. However, since only five teams were registered, not only was there no qualification, but the tournament could only be carried out with the five registered teams.

From the top division only the last placed in the relegation round descends into division IA. For this reason, only the first placed will be promoted to the top division next year, while the sixth placed will be relegated to the IB division. In return, the winner of Division IB moves up to Division IA. The last one from Division IB is also relegated to Division II A. The promotion regulation of Division IB with one promoted and relegated also applies to Division II A and II B. There is no direct relegated from Division III in this sense. Depending on a possible qualification for Division III, the last-placed team in Division III of the previous year must compete with the newly registered national teams in the qualification in order to play the two free places.

The Group A tournament was held from December 7th to 13th, 2014 in the Estonian capital Tallinn . The games took place in the Tondiraba Jäähall , which holds 5,840 spectators . The British team, which in the previous year had to be relegated from Division I due to the use of a player who was not eligible to play, succeeded in immediately returning to Group B of Division I on the fourth day of the game. However, the Romanian team, which had been in Group A since 2013 had heard, despite a 6-3 win against the Netherlands, to go to Group B of Division II. Newcomer South Korea only missed second place because of the direct comparison against the Lithuanian selection with equal points and ended up third.
