Nicolas "Nic" Petan (born March 22, 1995 in Delta , British Columbia ) is an Italian - Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League since February 2019 and for their farm team, the Toronto Marlies , plays in the American Hockey League on the position of the center .

Career

Petan began his career with the North Shore WC Bantam youth team in a regional Canadian youth division. In 2010 he was selected at the WHL Bantam Draft by the Portland Winterhawks in the first round in a total of 16th position. The following season, however, he began with the Greater Vancouver Canadians in the British Columbia Major Midget League, in whose first-all-star team he was selected, and was only used three times by his draft club in the Western Hockey League . Since 2011 he has been a permanent member of the Winterhawks, with whom he won the Ed Chynoweth Cup , the WHL championship trophy, in a 4-2 final series against the Edmonton Oil Kings in 2013. In the same season he reached the final of the Memorial Cup with the Winterhawks , but that was lost to the Halifax Mooseheads 4-6. Also in 2012 and 2014 he played with the Winterhawks in the WHL playoff final series, but lost them to the Edmonton Oil Kings. He himself won the Bob Clarke Trophy as the best scorer in the WHL in 2013 - together with his teammate Brendan Leipsic - and the WHL Plus-Minus Award and was second best scorer in the playoffs behind Ty Rattie . In 2015 he was the top scorer of the WHL playoffs and gave the second-most assists in the WHL main round behind Trevor Cox . In 2014 he was the second best scorer in the WHL behind Mitch Holmberg of the Spokane Chiefs . In 2013 and 2014 he was elected to the First All Star Team and in 2015 to the Second All Star Team of the Western Conference of the WHL.

At the NHL Entry Draft 2013 he was selected by the Winnipeg Jets in the second round as the 43rd player and signed in December of the same year. From 2015 he played for the NHL team, but was also used for its farm team , the Manitoba Moose . It was only in the 2018/19 season that the center forward managed to establish himself permanently in the Jets squad. In February 2019 it was given to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Sweden's Pär Lindholm .

International

Petan played for the Canadian U20s in the 2014 and 2015 World Championships . After only fourth place was achieved in the first year, he was able to achieve the world championship title with his team in 2015, to which he himself made a significant contribution as a joint top scorer with his teammates Sam Reinhart and Connor McDavid .
