Brendan Leipsic (born May 19, 1994 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with HK CSKA Moscow in the Continental Hockey League since August 2020 . The left winger previously played for the Toronto Maple Leafs , Vegas Golden Knights , Vancouver Canucks , Los Angeles Kings and Washington Capitals in the NHL .
Career
youth
Brendan Leipsic was born in Winnipeg and played there in his youth for the Winnipeg Monarchs and the Winnipeg Wild . For the 2010/11 season he moved to the highest-ranking Western Hockey League (WHL) to the Portland Winterhawks , before he represented his home country a little later at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2011 for the first time on an international level. After an average of two years in Portland, the attacker was selected in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft in 89th position by the Nashville Predators , who, as expected, sent him back to the WHL for the time being. There Leipsic then achieved the breakthrough by scoring 120 points in 68 games , so that - together with teammate Nic Petan - led the WHL and the entire Canadian Hockey League as top scorer and therefore with the Bob Clarke Trophy and the CHL Top Scorer Award was honored. He also won the WHL playoffs for the Ed Chynoweth Cup with the Winterhawks in this season 2012/13 and was appointed to the WHL (West) Second All-Star Team at the end of the season . In the subsequent Memorial Cup , the team only failed in the final due to the Halifax Mooseheads . Despite these achievements, the Canadian returned for a fourth and last year in the WHL before he switched to the organization of the Nashville Predators, which had already provided him with an entry contract in May 2013, for the 2014/15 season .
NHL
The Predators used Leipsic for the time being with their farm team , the Milwaukee Admirals , in the American Hockey League (AHL). There he did not even end his first professional season, but was given to the Toronto Maple Leafs in February 2015 together with Olli Jokinen and a first-round vote in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft . In return, the Predators received Cody Franson and Mike Santorelli . The Maple Leafs also sent the left winger to the Minors for the time being , so he established himself as a regular scorer for the Toronto Marlies in the AHL and ended the 2014/15 season with the most assists among all rookies (40). He had previously participated in the AHL All-Star Classic .
In February 2016, Leipsic was finally called up to the Maple Leafs squad for the first time and subsequently made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL), where he promptly scored his first goal. After six missions, however, he returned to the Marlies, where he also spent the entire 2016/17 season. In June 2017 the then newly founded chose him Vegas Golden Knights in the NHL expansion draft in 2017 by the Maple Leafs from. A little later he signed a new two-year contract with the Golden Knights and earned a place in the NHL squad as part of the first preparation for the season in franchise history . In February 2018, however, it was handed over to the Vancouver Canucks on the trade deadline , which in return sent Philip Holm to Las Vegas. In Vancouver, the attacker was active until the end of the year when he was supposed to be sent to the AHL via the waiver in December and his contract was taken over by the Los Angeles Kings . There he ended the season and then moved to the Washington Capitals as a free agent .
At the beginning of May 2020, during the 2019/20 season , which was interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic , his contract in Washington was prematurely terminated. A few days earlier, excerpts from a group chat had been published on Instagram in which Leipsic had repeatedly expressed himself hostile to women as well as insulting other NHL players and their wives. He stated that a friend's account had been compromised, but at the same time admitted the statements and apologized publicly.
KHL
In August 2020, HK CSKA Moscow from the Continental Hockey League (KHL) announced the signing of Leipsic.
