Samson "Sam" Reinhart (born November 6, 1995 in North Vancouver , British Columbia ) is a Canadian ice hockey player . The center has been under contract with the Buffalo Sabers in the National Hockey League (NHL) since July 2014 , who had selected him in second position in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft . He is the son of former NHL professional Paul Reinhart , who played in the NHL for eleven seasons. His older brothers Max and Griffin are also ice hockey players.

Career

Reinhart began his career in his neighboring community, West Vancouver , where he went through various ages with the Hollyburn MHA youth club . He then played for two years for the Vancouver Northwest Giants in the BC Hockey Major Midget League and won the league title in its 2010/11 season. With 78 points from 34 games, he was also the second best scorer in the league. He was also appointed to the selection of his home province British Columbia for the Canada Games 2011, where he won the gold medal with the U16 team. In the tournament's scorer rating, he was tied with Nathan MacKinnon in fourth place with eleven points .

With the Giants, Reinhart qualified for the Telus Cup , in which the six best Canadian teams at midget level play for the national title every year . Reinhart scored three goals and six assists in the opening game. He finished the tournament with 20 points from seven games as the second best scorer of the tournament and received the award as the best striker.

Simultaneously, Sam Reinhart completed four games for the Kootenay Ice from the Western Hockey League , which had selected him at the beginning of the season in a total of 15th position in the WHL Bantam Draft . There he played in a team with his brother Max . On his WHL debut against the Edmonton Oil Kings , the team of his other brother Griffin , he scored the winning goal. In the play-offs 2011 he was back for seven appearances in the squad of Ice, with which he was finally able to win the Ed Chynoweth Cup by beating the Portland Winterhawks in the final series .

For the 2011/12 season he finally moved to the WHL and played in the team's second attack row. Occasionally he also stood on the ice at the side of his brother Max. He finished the season with 62 points from 67 games as the fourth-best rookie scorer in the league and was also the rookie with the highest points in the history of the Ice team. In addition, he was behind his brother in second place in the team's internal scorer rating. At the end of the season he prevailed in the election for the Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy as Rookie of the Year in the WHL against his future strike partner Tim Bozon .

In the following season Reinhart was able to significantly improve his point yield and with 85 points from 72 games exceeded the mark of one point per game for the first time. At the end of the season he led the scorer list of the Kootenay Ice and was elected to the Second All-Star Team of the Eastern Conference . He was then appointed team captain of the Ice at the age of 17.

In the CHL Top Prospects Game , in which the 40 most hopeful talents compete against each other for the NHL Entry Draft , Reinhart was named captain of Don Cherry's team and closed the game with a goal and an assist. In February 2014, he led the WHL with 22 assists and 32 points and set new team records for the Ice for the longest series of points and assists. He was then named WHL Player of the Month. Prior to the 2014 NHL Entry Draft , Reinhart was ranked second in the International Scouting Services . Eventually, the Buffalo Sabers picked him second and signed him in July 2014. In December 2014, the Sabers deleted him from the NHL squad, so he returned to the Kootenay Ice.

With the start of the 2015/16 season, Reinhart is firmly in the Sabers NHL squad.
