He was then selected in the first round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft as the seventh player of the New York Islanders . Initially, the attacker played for the University of Minnesota team for a year and a half , then was used during the season with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in the American Hockey League . He finally made his debut for the Islanders in the National Hockey League at the end of the 2007-08 season . He spent the 2008/09 season completely with the Islanders.
After eight years in the organization of the Islanders, Okposo did not get a new contract in New York after the 2015/16 season, so he joined the Buffalo Sabers as a free agent in July 2016 . There he signed a seven-year contract that should bring him an annual salary of $ 6 million.
