James "Jimmy" Vesey junior (born May 26, 1993 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Buffalo Sabers of the National Hockey League since July 2019 . The left winger previously played for the New York Rangers for three seasons between 2016 and 2019 .
Career
Youth and college
Jimmy Vesey was born in Boston and grew up in the suburb of North Reading . In his youth he attended Belmont Hill School in Belmont and played for their ice hockey team in the regional high school league. With the 2011/12 season he moved to the Eastern Junior Hockey League (EJHL) and spent a season there with the South Shore Kings , leading the league in goals (48) and points (91) and subsequently as the most valuable player was awarded. In the subsequent NHL Entry Draft 2012 , the Nashville Predators selected him in 66th position. In the summer of 2012 changed Vesey to Harvard University , where he studies in Administrative Sciences (Engl. Government ) started and in parallel for their university teams Harvard Crimson , in the ECAC played. In his first season, the left winger scored eleven goals and seven assists in 27 games, so that he was named Rookie of the Year in the Ivy League and voted into the ECAC All-Rookie Team. In addition, he took part in the U20 World Cup in 2013 with the US U20 national team at the turn of the year and won the gold medal there with the team.
Vesey made his breakthrough at Harvard in the 2014/15 season when he increased his personal statistics to 58 scorer points from 37 games and won the ECAC championship with the Crimson. He was also named ECAC Player of the Year and was appointed to the ECAC First All-Star Team. Then the Nashville Predators offered him a contract so that he should complete the last regular season games with the team and take part in the playoffs of the National Hockey League (NHL). However, Vesey decided against this offer or for a fourth and final year of college and thus equivalent to completing his studies. Subsequently, in May 2015, he was part of Team USA , which won the bronze medal at the World Cup . Vesey completed the 2015/16 season as team captain of the Harvard Crimson and came up with 24 goals and 22 assists in 33 games. He also won the prestigious Hobey Baker Memorial Award for best college player in the country, a finalist of which he had been the previous year.
National Hockey League
Even after the 2015/16 season, the Nashville Predators offered him a contract, which Vesey also refused. Since the player rights obtained through the NHL Entry Draft expire after four years, this also meant that Vesey would become a free agent in mid-August 2016 and be allowed to negotiate with all NHL teams. Nevertheless, the Buffalo Sabers , who were traded among the favorites for a commitment by Vesey from the start , acquired his player rights from the Predators in June 2016 and in return sent a third-round vote for the 2016 NHL Entry Draft to Nashville. As a result, the Sabers secured the exclusive negotiating rights with him for the time being, although no corresponding contract was concluded by mid-August. When he started the Free Agency, Vesey negotiated with seven other teams, each of which was relatively close to his home in Boston, namely the Boston Bruins , Chicago Blackhawks , New Jersey Devils , New York Islanders , New York Rangers , Pittsburgh Penguins and the Toronto Maple Leafs - Far more franchises had expressed their initial interest , so the attacker was considered one of the most sought-after free agents this summer.
On August 19, 2016, Vesey finally signed an entry-level contract with the New York Rangers, to whose NHL line-up he belongs to the beginning of the 2016/17 season. On October 17, 2016, he scored his first goal in the NHL in the game against the San Jose Sharks . Vesey spent a total of three seasons with the Rangers and set a personal record with 35 points in the 2018/19 season . In early July 2019, he was transferred to the Buffalo Sabers in exchange for a third-round vote in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft .
