Zack Kassian (born January 24, 1991 in Windsor , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Edmonton Oilers in the National Hockey League since December 2015 and plays in the position of right winger .
Career
Kassian was selected fourth in the 2007 OHL Priority Selection by the Peterborough Petes , for whom he then went on the ice in the Ontario Hockey League . In his second year in Peterborough, he was his team with 63 points second-best scorer and took the team Cherry at CHL Top Prospects Game in part. After he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2009 in 13th place by the Buffalo Sabers , he was named team captain for the Petes for the 2009/10 season . In January 2010 he left the Petes and moved to his hometown club, the Windsor Spitfires . On January 21, 2010 Kassian was suspended for 20 games after a check against the head of Matt Kennedy . After his suspension he won the J. Ross Robertson Cup and the Memorial Cup with the Spitfires .
On November 1, 2010, he signed a three-year contract with the Buffalo Sabers. At the end of the 2010/11 season , the attacker played three playoff games for the Sabers' farm team , the Portland Pirates , in the American Hockey League (AHL).
Kassian and his teammate Marc-André Gragnani came to the Vancouver Canucks through an exchange deal on February 27, 2012 . After three years with the Canucks, he was handed over to the Canadiens de Montréal in July 2015 , who in return sent Brandon Prust and a five-round vote for the 2016 NHL Entry Draft to Vancouver.
A few days before the 2015/16 season was due to start, Kassian was involved in a car accident in which he broke his left foot and nose. The Canadian did not drive the vehicle himself, but immediately after the incident he was included in the NHLPA 's substance abuse program (abuse of psychotropic substances ) and suspended from gaming operations without payment. The decision as to when he could play again was made by the program’s medical officer and was made on December 15, 2015. The Canadiens then put him directly on the waiver , but not to send him to the AHL, but to prepare a swap soon. They did this on December 28, 2015 with the Edmonton Oilers , who signed Kassian and sent Ben Scrivens to Montréal in return . The Canadiens responded to the ongoing injury to Carey Price and the unconvincing performances of Mike Condon and Dustin Tokarski .
International
With the Canada Ontario team , Kassian won the gold medal in the 2008 World U-17 Hockey Challenge . A year later he played for Canada in the 2009 U18 World Junior Championship . In 2011 he won the silver medal with the Canadian selection at the U20 World Junior Championship .
