Carey Price (born August 16, 1987 in Anahim Lake , British Columbia ) is a Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Canadiens de Montréal in the National Hockey League since 2007 . Previously, he was five seasons for the American junior team Tri-City Americans in the Western Hockey League on the ice. In the 2005 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected by the Canadiens in a total of fifth position.
After two more seasons with his junior team, in which he was named CHL Goaltender of the Year , among other things , Price was appointed to the squad of the Hamilton Bulldogs from the American Hockey League in 2007 . He then won the Calder Cup with his team and was awarded the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy as the most valuable player in the play-offs . Since the 2007/08 NHL season he has been in the squad of the Canadiens de Montréal and was initially a substitute goalkeeper behind Cristobal Huet and Jaroslav Halák , before he rose to the team's regular goalkeeper in 2010. In the following season he set a new team record with 72 completed games. His breakthrough came in Montréal in the 2014/15 season, when he was awarded the Hart Memorial Trophy , the Ted Lindsay Award , the Vezina Trophy and the William M. Jennings Trophy . He has also been a member of the NHL All-Star Games squad six times since 2009 .
At the international level, Price won the gold medal with the Canadian national team at the U20 World Junior Championship in 2007 and was named the most valuable player of the tournament. He won further gold medals at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi and at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey in Toronto .
Carey Price is currently the only active goalkeeper in the NHL who comes from a First Nation .
Career
Youth (until 2003)
Carey Price grew up in the small village of Anahim Lake in the Canadian province of British Columbia and began playing ice hockey as a defender before moving to the goalkeeping position. Since there was no junior team in his place of residence, he played from the age of ten in Williams Lake, 320 kilometers away . His father drove him three times a week to practice and play on British Columbia Highway 20 to the neighboring city. Since these car journeys took a long time, he decided after a while to buy his own Piper Cherokee so that he could take his son to training by plane, weather permitting.
After his family rented a second home in Williams Lake, Carey Price eventually moved to Williams Lake permanently while in secondary school to avoid the long drives and flights. In 2002, the goalkeeper joined the British Columbia Junior Hockey League to the Quesnel Millionaires and was also in the WHL Bantam Draft , in which the teams of the Western Hockey League players from the Midget leagues draften can by in Kennewick -based Tri-City Americans selected in seventh position overall.
Western Hockey League (2003-2007)
Towards the end of the 2002/03 season Price received his first short stint with the Americans when he was substituted on for the last third in the 6-0 loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings .
In the following season , Price finally moved to Tri-City and was there as a substitute goalkeeper behind Tyler Weiman, who was three years older, in 28 games. He recorded a catch quota of 91.5%. In the play-offs , Price was promoted to the team's goalkeeper and led the Americans to a 4-1 win in the Best-of-Seven series against the Portland Winterhawks , before taking on the defending champions and regular season winners in the second round, the Kelowna Rockets , failed. In the 2004/05 season Carey Price was the regular goalkeeper in Tri-City and developed over the course of the season into one of the best goalkeepers in the league. At the end of the regular season he was one of the most frequently used goalkeepers and set personal bests with a catch rate of 92 percent and eight shutouts . In addition, only Devan Dubnyk exceeded his value of 1665 saved shots on goal. With fourth place in the US Division , Price's team just managed to get back into the play-offs, where they were eliminated in the first round in five games against the Seattle Thunderbirds .
Before the 2005 NHL Entry Draft , in which the 30 teams of the National Hockey League secured the rights to junior players, Carey Price was listed in the final ranking of the scouts as the best North American goalkeeper. Since the NHL season was completely canceled due to a strike lasting several months, the so-called lockout , the order of the drafts could not be determined by the placement of the teams in the regular season, as is normal . Instead, the result of a lottery process decided which team was allowed to choose where. The Canadiens de Montréal received one of the five highest voting rights since 1984. They picked Carey Price fifth in the first round, making him the first goalkeeper to be drawn in that draft. On September 9, 2005, he played in a rookie tournament for the first time in the jersey of the Canadiens when the team lost 3-2 to the Toronto Maple Leafs . He then returned to the Western Hockey League.
In the following season 2005/06 Price could not quite build on his previous season's successes in regular time, but qualified with the Tri-City Americans for the play-offs. Against the Everett Silvertips , the team was eliminated again in the first round. Price was then invited to the training camp in Montreal, but again received no contract with the Canadiens. So he returned to Tri-City a second time. In the 2006/07 WHL season , Price was used in a total of 46 season games and recorded 30 wins, almost one and a half times as many as in the previous season. With a catch quota of 91.7%, it was also third in the league. The Americans finished the season with a new franchise record of 96 regular season points in second place in the US Division . After the end of the season, Carey Price was awarded the Del Wilson Trophy for his achievements , which is given each year to the best goalkeeper of the regular season. In the election for Goaltender of the Year of the umbrella organization Canadian Hockey League , he prevailed against the best goalkeepers from the other two Canadian junior leagues, Steve Mason from the Ontario Hockey League and Ondřej Pavelec from the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . He was also elected to the All-Star Teams of the Western Conference and the CHL. However, the team could not build on the performances from the regular season in the play-offs and, like two years earlier, failed in the first round at the Seattle Thunderbirds.
Calder Cup win in Hamilton (2007)
After the early elimination of his junior team from the play-offs, Price signed a three-year entry contract on April 10, 2007 with the Canadiens de Montréal . He was then sent straight to the Hamilton Bulldogs , the Canadiens' farm team in the American Hockey League (AHL). There he played his first appearance in the penultimate game of the regular season in a 3-1 win against the Grand Rapids Griffins and was elected the first star of the game.
In the play-offs, Price immediately succeeded in taking over the post of goalkeeper from Yann Danis . In the first round he was able to record his first shutout in the opening game in the series against the Rochester Americans in the 2-0 win of his team with 34 shots saved . The Bulldogs eventually won the series with goalkeeper Price after six games.
The team then managed to get into the final series through further victories in the series against the Manitoba Moose and the Chicago Wolves . There she met the Hershey Bears , who had already finished the regular season as the team with the best points and had only lost two games on the way to the final. In the first game of the final series, Price showed his best game so far in the Bulldogs jersey and led his team to a 4-0 victory with 46 saved shots. The team finally won the final series after five games and thus won the first Calder Cup in team history. Carey Price, who recorded 15 wins in the play-offs and a catch rate of 93.6%, received the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy as the most valuable player (MVP) of the playoffs after the last game . At 19 years and nine months old, he was the youngest player to ever receive the trophy.
Beginnings in the NHL and first play-offs (2007-2010)
Before the start of the 2006/07 season , Price took part in the Canadiens training camp for the third time and was able to prevail against Jaroslav Halák in the battle for a place in the Montreal NHL squad . He was thus used as a substitute goalkeeper behind Cristobal Huet . The rookie goalkeeper made his debut in the National Hockey League on October 10, 2007 against the Pittsburgh Penguins , when he also recorded his first win at the 3-2 Canadiens. In January 2008 he was sent back to the AHL after three weak games in a row, but returned to the Canadiens squad after just ten games. Price achieved his first assist on February 9, 2008 in a 6-1 loss to the Ottawa Senators when he set up the goal of Andrei Kaszitsyn . Two games later, the goalkeeper finally managed the first shutout of his NHL career with 34 saved shots against the Philadelphia Flyers .
Shortly before the trade deadline , the Canadiens gave Cristobal Huet to the Washington Capitals , so that Price took his post as regular goalkeeper. After Huet's change, Price achieved a total of twelve wins in 15 missions by the end of the regular season, including a series of seven games won at the end of the season. In doing so, he helped the Canadiens to head their conference for the first time since 1989 at the end of the season . He was then named NHL Rookie of the Month for March and was voted best goalkeeper in the NHL All-Rookie Team . In the play-offs Price was set as the goalkeeper and was able to help the Canadiens with two shutouts to a narrow 4-3 win in the series against arch rivals Boston Bruins , although he conceded a total of ten goals in the fifth and sixth game. The team then met the Philadelphia Flyers . In the series, however, Price could not build on the performances of the previous season and was replaced in the third game for Jaroslav Halák . Finally, the Canadiens were eliminated after five games.
In the 2008-09 season started Price with six wins from their first nine games and won the award for November team internal player of the month. However, he was sidelined for four games in December 2008 due to the flu and an injury in training. After a brief comeback, the goalkeeper suffered another groin injury at the end of the month and was out for eight games. Meanwhile, Price was voted into the starting grid of the NHL All-Star Game , which the Canadiens had been selected to host that year, in a fan vote . With more than 1.5 million votes over the phone and on the website of the NHL, only the striker cut in the vote Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins better. After recovering from injury, Price was on the Eastern Conference team, which won 12:11 after the shootout . He was also nominated for the injured Erik Ersberg in the YoungStars Game , where he lost with his team 5: 9. After the All-Star Game, Price was unable to build on his previous performance and he only won seven of 23 games. In eighth place in their conference, the " Habs " met with Price in the gate in the first round again on the Boston Bruins, where they were swept , so eliminated without winning a game. Still, the goalkeeper was awarded the Canadiens' Molson Cup after the season ended .
In the 2009/10 season , Price shared the operating time with his previous substitute goalkeeper Halák. Price could not improve his performance from last season and started the season with only two wins in his first eight games. He did not succeed in a month in October 2009 before he ended the series with a 2-1 win against the Boston Bruins. The Canadiens were able to narrowly qualify for the play-offs at the end of the season with 88 points in fourth place in the Northeast Division . They opted for Halák as a regular goalkeeper, so that Price was only in one game in the first round series against the winner of the Presidents' Trophy , the Washington Capitals . However, he could not convince. With Halák in goal, the Canadiens finally decided the series in their seventh game for themselves and moved into the final of the Eastern Conference by beating the Pittsburgh Penguins. Although the team was defeated there in five games by the Philadelphia Flyers, Halák was celebrated in Montreal as a play-off hero and compared with Patrick Roy . Price, on the other hand, was only used in four games, none of which the Canadiens won.
Halák transfer and promotion to goalkeeper (since 2010)
In the off-season , both Halák and Price's contracts expired and both became Restricted Free Agents . Therefore, after the end of the play-offs, it was speculated whether Price would be given to another team. Instead, the general manager of the Canadiens, Pierre Gauthier , surprisingly swapped Halák for two young talents from the St. Louis Blues in June 2010 . This transfer was very controversial among the Canadiens fans and caused a stir in the Canadian lower house . For example, in an online survey by the sports broadcaster The Sports Network, three quarters of readers thought the barter was wrong. Price signed a new two-year $ 5.5 million deal with the Canadiens and became the team's top goalkeeper. Alex Auld was signed for a year as his replacement .
After a solid start with six wins in the first ten games of the 2010/11 season , Price won a total of eight games with the Canadiens in November 2010 and recorded three shutouts. At the end of the month he only had to admit defeat to the captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Sidney Crosby , in the election for NHL player of the month . He was also named player of the week once. In the fan voting for the 2011 NHL All-Star Game , Price was again among the goalkeepers with the most votes, but could not defend his place in the starting line-up against Marc-André Fleury . He was finally chosen by Eric Staal in his team and lost to the Lidström team with 10:11. At the end of the season, Price had set a new goalkeeping record in the Canadiens' 100-year franchise history with 72 season games. His 1,982 shots saved also marked a new record since this statistic was introduced in the 1982/83 season . Price was awarded the Molson Cup for the second time for his achievements . The "Habs" qualified in second place in the Northeast Division for the play-offs and met there again in the first round against the Boston Bruins. After Price helped his team to a 2-0 win in the opening game with a shutout, the Bruins turned the series and finally won after seven games in overtime . Despite the early elimination, Price recorded the second-highest catch quota and the second-best goals against goal after the end of the play-offs. Only his counterpart Tim Thomas from Boston was better .
In the following season Price was the Slovak Peter Budaj , who signed the Canadiens for two years, as a second goalkeeper aside. Of the first six encounters of the season, Price could only win one before he ended this negative series with the 100th victory of his NHL career against the Philadelphia Flyers. Although the goalkeeper also won the following three games with the Canadiens and was voted Player of the Week, neither Price nor the Canadiens could build on the performances of the previous season. Even after the dismissal of coach Jacques Martin in December, the Canadiens failed to catch up with the play-offs. Nevertheless, Carey Price was able to participate in the NHL All-Star Game for the third time in a row in January 2012 . This time he was chosen by Zdeno Chára , the captain of the Boston Bruins, in his team. The team won the game 12: 9. However, the Canadiens did not achieve any major successes even after the interruption, so that they were in the last place in the Eastern Conference for the first time in early February . The team stayed there until the end of the season and Price missed the play-offs with the team for the first time in his NHL career. For the goalkeeper, however, the season had ended three games earlier due to a slight concussion he had suffered in a collision with his team-mate David Desharnais in training. Price recorded a catch quota of 91.6% and a goalscoring average of 2.43 over the course of the season and was honored again with the Molson Cup .
After the goalkeeper's contract expired, Price signed a new six-year contract with the Canadiens before the start of the 2012/13 season , which will bring him a total of $ 39 million over the term.
After the expiry of the NHL Collective Bargaining Agreement , the start of the season was delayed by a lockout until January 2013. After a defeat in the opening game, Price achieved six straight wins with the Canadiens before the team returned for the first time the following month stood at the head of the Eastern Conference. Finally, the team finished the regular season as the best team in the Northeast Division and secured a place in the play-offs as the second team in the Conference. Then Price did not achieve the same level of performance as at the beginning of the season and only won two of his last eight regular season appearances. So he was substituted in a game against the Toronto Maple Leafs after ten minutes, which meant the earliest substitution of his NHL career. For his performances over the entire season he won his fourth Molson Cup in a row. In the play-offs, the Canadiens met the Ottawa Senators in the first round , against whom they were eliminated after five games. Price was criticized after the elimination after conceding 13 goals in four games and recording a catch rate of just 89.4%. His comments on the high public pressure in Montreal were also controversial.
Price made his breakthrough in Montréal in the 2014/15 season. He led the league not only in wins (44), in the catch rate (93.3%) and on average (1.96), but also won the William M. Jennings Trophy as a goalkeeper together with Corey Crawford of the Chicago Blackhawks the team with the fewest goals conceded. With the 44 wins of the regular season, he also set a new franchise record, surpassing the previous record of Ken Dryden (42 wins in the 1975/76 season). After the season, at the NHL Awards ceremony , Price was voted MVP of the season by players and journalists , receiving the Hart Memorial Trophy and the Ted Lindsay Award . He was also honored with the Vezina Trophy as the best goalkeeper. Never before had a goalkeeper managed to win these four trophies in one year; In addition, Price is only the 15th player (and the second goalkeeper after Dominik Hašek ) in NHL history to receive the Hart Memorial Trophy and the Ted Lindsay Award in the same year. In December 2015, Price was also named Canada's Sportsman of the Year and received the Lou Marsh Trophy .
At the beginning of the 2015/16 season, Price played twelve competitive games (of which the Canadiens won ten) before sustaining a serious knee injury in November, which resulted in him being out for the rest of the season. The Canadiens, who started the season with a starting record of 10 wins in a row, also won only ten of the following 32 games and subsequently missed the playoffs for the first time since 2012.
In July 2017, Price signed a new eight-year contract in Montréal, which will come into effect with the 2018/19 season. This guarantees the Canadian an average annual salary of 10.5 million US dollars, which makes him the best-paid goalkeeper and one of the highest-paid players in the league. In December 2018, he recorded his 300th victory in the NHL, which had previously only been achieved by Jacques Plante in the Canadiens jersey .
International
Carey Price competed in his first international tournament in 2004 when he stood on the ice for Team Canada Pacific in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge . There the team managed to reach the final with a win against the USA , where they were defeated by the selection from the province of Ontario with 2: 5 and thus won the silver medal. In the summer of that year, Price was then for the first time in the Team Canada called to the U-18 Junior World Cup , now the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament to take part in the Czech Republic. There the goalkeeper was able to win the gold medal with the Canadian team by beating the hosts in the final.
Then Price was reappointed to the squad of the U18 national team in April 2005 after his team left the WHL play-offs for the U18 Junior World Championship early. After his team finished the preliminary round as group winners and thus received a bye to the semifinals, they moved into the final with another win against the Czech Republic. There, however, Team Canada had to admit defeat to the USA with 1: 5 and thus won the silver medal.
After attending several training camps in the following years without making it into the junior national team, Price was finally part of the Canadian national team at the 2007 Junior World Cup in Sweden. In the opening game, Price was able to record a shutout in the 2-0 win against the hosts . As group winners, Team Canada qualified directly for the semi-finals, where they defeated the USA in a shootout . Finally, the team also won the final against the Russian selection 4-2 and thus the gold medal. Price was on the ice for Canada throughout the tournament and won all six games. With an average of 1.14 goals per game, a catch rate of 96.1% and two shutouts, he set up tournament best performances. At the end of the final, Carey Price was voted the most valuable player of the tournament and also received the award for best goalkeeper and a nomination for the All-Star Team.
Carey won the gold medal with the Canadian national team at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi . He was used in five out of six Canadians games, with two shutouts with a catch rate of 97.2%. Because of these achievements, the IIHF voted him the most valuable goalkeeper of the tournament.
In September 2016 he represented his home country at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 and remained there in five missions without defeat, so that he won the gold medal with the team.
Play style and special features
Price, like most NHL goalkeepers today, plays butterfly style . In doing so, he falls on his knees and spreads the lower legs with the leg guards as far away from the body as possible. At the same time, he pulls the schooners together in the middle to cover the so-called five hole , the gap between the two legs, and also uses his stick. In Nahschüssen and Bauer tricks Price also often applies the "paddle down" technique in which it horizontally the club puts on the ice in an attempt to ward off the puck.
One of Price's strengths is also his good puck handling, which he mainly uses in situations behind the goal and in a short game . He is considered an athletic goalkeeper and can use his height of 1.91 meters in his positional play, in which he stands upright for a long time before using the butterfly technique. After improving the initial problems with his fishing technique, his quick reflexes are also among his strengths. In addition, the goalkeeper is known for his good performance in pressure situations.

Carey Price grew up in a family of ice hockey. His father Jerry Price was also a professional ice hockey player and was the NHL Amateur Draft in 1978 in the eighth round at the 126th position from the Philadelphia Flyers drafted . However, he never made it to the NHL, so he then played four seasons in various minor leagues . He was mainly active in the Eastern Hockey League and completed three missions for the Milwaukee Admirals in the International Hockey League in the 1978/79 season . His mother Lynda Price is a member of the Ulkatcho First Nations , a tribe of the indigenous people of Canada , as whose tribal leader she worked for several years.
Carey Price's cousin is Shane Doan , the reigning captain of the Arizona Coyotes . The winger was drafted in seventh position by the Winnipeg Jets ten years before Price and has since played for the franchise, which relocated to Phoenix a year later . Another cousin of the Canadian is Keaton Ellerby , who played in the NHL from 2010 to 2015 and is currently in the roster of Barys Astana from the KHL.
Carey Price married Angela Webber in 2013, whom he met while in Tri-City in 2004. Although he lives in the Montreal area, he owns a house in Kamloops in his home province of British Columbia, where he usually spends the summer. During the lockout , which delayed the start of the 2012/13 season by several months, Price returned to Tri-City and trained with his junior team. The goalkeeper's favorite summer activity is rodeo riding, famous for its former home in Williams Lake . He took part in the festival there, the Williams Lake Stampede , in 2011.
