Yann Danis (born June 21, 1981 in Saint-Jérôme , Québec ) is a Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the St. John's IceCaps in the American Hockey League since October 2016 .
Career
Yann Danis began his career as a teenager in sub-class junior leagues in his home province of Québec and in the province of Ontario , where he received several awards for his good performance. After graduating from high school, he was offered ice hockey scholarships from six universities in 2000, and he chose Brown University in the US state of Rhode Island .
In the college team, the Brown Bears , he established himself in his sophomore year as a regular goalkeeper and was selected by the regional university league ECAC Hockey in the second all-star team in the following two seasons. He experienced the high point of his student days in the 2003/04 season, when he received the awards for best player and best goalkeeper of the ECAC and was also selected by the national college league NCAA in the East First All-American team. There was also a nomination for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award .
In the spring of 2004 Danis finished his studies with a degree in private and state economics and a little later signed his first professional contract with the Montréal Canadiens from the NHL . For their farm team , the Hamilton Bulldogs , he was used twice in the AHL until the end of the season , was able to win both games and was once without a goal.
In the 2004/05 season he was the goalkeeper of the Bulldogs and impressed with good performances in his first season. The following year he came to his first appearances in the NHL when he guarded the goal of the Canadiens in six games. Most of the working time he still got in the AHL at Hamilton, where he showed weaknesses just like the entire team and in the end missed qualifying for the playoffs . Nevertheless, he was invited to the AHL All-Star Classic in February 2006 and received the awards as MVP of the All-Star Game along with Wade Flaherty .
In the 2006/07 season Danis played as a regular goalkeeper together with Jaroslav Halák in the goal of the Bulldogs and they qualified again for the finals. Danis had only shown average performance during the season and was replaced shortly before the playoffs by 19-year-old Carey Price , who led the team to win the Calder Cup .
The following season was another step backwards. Although Danis received the most ice age of all goalkeepers in Hamilton, but could not prevail against the team-internal competition. In addition, the team did not reach the playoff ranks. As a result, his contract was not extended.
In July 2008, the New York Islanders signed him, who sent him to their farm team, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers , at the beginning of the 2008/09 season . There he was able to regain his old form and when the goalkeeper of the Islanders, Rick DiPietro , injured, Danis was appointed to the NHL squad.
After he was back-up from Martin Brodeur with the New Jersey Devils in the 2009/10 season , he was committed to Amur Khabarovsk from the Continental Hockey League in July 2010 .
On July 4, 2011, Danis signed a one-year contract with the Edmonton Oilers . For the 2013/14 season he was equipped with a two-way contract by the Philadelphia Flyers . After this was not renewed, he spent the 2014/15 season in Norfolk and Hartford before he joined the New Jersey Devils for a year in July 2015 and also played in the AHL for the Albany Devils . He did not receive a further contract from the Devils, so he had been looking for a new employer since July 2016. He found this in October 2016 in St. John's IceCaps , which provided him with a pure AHL contract.
