Hōshōkaku , the former main building of the prefectural normal school

The Saitama University ( Jap. 埼玉大学 , Saitama daigaku , short Saidai ( 埼大 )) is a state university in Japan . The main campus is in Sakura-ku , Saitama in Saitama Prefecture .

history

The university was founded in 1949 through the merger of the following state schools:

  • the Urawa high school ( 浦 和 高等学校 , Urawa kōtō gakkō , founded in 1921),
  • the Saitama Normal School ( 埼 玉 師範学校 , Saitama shihan gakkō , founded in 1873), and
  • the youth normal school Saitama ( 埼 玉 青年 師範学校 , Saitama his shihan gakkō , founded in 1922).

The Urawa High School was one of the preparatory courses for the Imperial Universities , so after the Pacific War it wanted to be merged into the University of Tokyo ; but she became the predecessor of the Faculty of Humanities and Natural Sciences at Saitama University.

Saitama Normal School was the university's oldest predecessor. It was founded in 1873 as a prefectural teacher training school and in 1901 it was divided into two schools (for boys and girls). The two were merged in 1943 to form the state normal school. The prefectural normal school for boys was the introduction of soccer to Saitama Prefecture, so its former main building (the Hōshōkaku ( 鳳翔 閣 ), built in 1878, removed in 1959) is a motif in the Urawa Red Diamonds logo .

The university opened with two faculties: humanities and natural sciences, and education. In 1964 the current campus was reopened and the faculties moved to the campus. The Faculty of Humanities and Natural Sciences developed into four faculties: Liberal Arts (1965), Economics (1965), Natural Sciences (1976), and Engineering (1976).
