Sakura-ku ( Japanese 桜 区 , 'cherry district') is a district ( ku ) of the Japanese city of Saitama . Sakura is located on the Arakawa River near Tokyo .
history
As an independent city with over 500,000 inhabitants, Urawa was the administrative seat of Saitama Prefecture on Honshū , the main island of Japan, until 2001 . On May 1, 2001 , Urawa was dissolved as a city (Shi) and merged with Ōmiya , Yono and Iwatsuki to form the new prefecture capital Saitama, in which the former city of Urawa comprises the southern districts of Sakura-ku, Urawa-ku , Minami-ku ('southern district') ) and Midori-ku ('green district').
